Makes the Harvest that much cooler Scott! Congrats again on patterning a buck, knowing he was there, and being able to harvest him! Not a easy job

I didn’t do the best job at taking photos of this buck. But, here is the history of this buck. I have been hunting this same buck for the last 3 years. It has been a nice 9 pointer for that entire time.

In 2003 he presented himself, the weekend before the gun opener for a brief moment, just before dark, as he was working a scrape line. Rumor had it, the neighbor shot him the second weekend of gun season..that is how it goes

In 2004 we spotted him in summer feeding on one of our summer plots I have since learned to discount “stories” of a buck being shot until I see them, as our area produces a lot of big boys now that we practive QDM. One year prior to his harvest (Oct 29, 2004) I was hunting the same stand I had spotted him the year before and it was raining all afternoon. The bucks were on the move, as I had seen 3 other before 3 PM. At about 3:30 this big 9 pointer worked within 18 yards broad side before I turned my head and was busted by him He simply turned his rear end towards me and calmy worked off in the distance.

He would not be seen again for a week, the night before the MN gun opener, when my good friend Adam Adler spotted him and a nice 10 pointer from his bow stand. This 9 dwarfed the 10, but Adam was not able to get a good shot, even as the deer closed within 30 yards.

The very last night of the MN gun season, the deer showed himself again. He came out chasing a doe in the field that borders our neighbors. My neighbor spotted him and grunted at him. The doe and the buck both headed directly at my neighbor on his stand, running right underneath. We are not sure what really happened, but my neighbor never got a shot. As they dissapeared in the woods I could here the buck crashing through the woods. It was then Adam’s turn again. The big boy came within 30 yards of Adam, but kept pine trees between him and Adam, running from tree to tree then stopping. Adam thought he had a clear shot and fired, then fired Again as he jumped across a fence. GONE!

Well, this brings up to 2005. We have over 50 pictures of this buck now, from Velvet to just before Harvest. I hunted the same stand I always do the week before gun season. At 8:30 on 10/29/05 I heard some crashing coming through the woods…the kind of crashing a big buck makes. I watched closely and could see this guy was a shooter. I thought it was either the 9 or a 12 we have pictures of, either of I would be very happy with. The buck was going to cross my opening at 22 yards broad size. The buck never showed. I was confused, I glanced to my left and here he was, coming CLOSER to me. I slowly changed positions and prayed for one good show. I placed the pin and my arrow dissapeared. The buck kicked high and ran off about 60 yards before he dissapeared. I hung my bow and sat back down to gather myself for a minute, then two, then three. WOW, that is exciting stuff. I knew I had a good hit on him, so I headed back to tell my dad about the buck.

We decided to hang stands in the meantime..seemed like days. After 4 hours we went after him. As soon as we found blood, we could seem him down Like I said, exciting stuff!! That is what hunting is all about. Sorry for the long story.

Great story. Nothing better than seeing that donkey kick upon impact. I’m still waiting for my chance. Your story really gets me pumped to get back in the stand!
