So how many guys here will be muzzle loader hunting in MN this year? I need some help here guys and yes I put this off way too long, I bought a Thompson/Center Omega .50 last Dec and I have not even shot the thing yet I know very little about them and have not shot one before. Anyone near the Rochester area willing to show me what I need to know about shooting them? I live very close to the Southern Minnesota SPORTSMAN’S CLUB and I just bought a membership so anyone that comes with me (one person) could shoot for free.

steve, your WAY ahead of me. i have been holding off buying one, cause i figured i’d be done by now. i still need a buck, so i’m trying to convince the wife that i NEED a muzzle loader. guess i shouldn’t have bought a new bow, a new o/u and a new rifle in the last 3 months. she thinks i’ve spent enough on hunting this year already….

The Omega is a fantastic gun. If you want to go one step further, look at the Encore. I have an Encore and love it. It’s my primary Deer gun even during the regular Deer season. Both guns are a breeze to shoot and load.

I recommend buying a reloading kit that holds the primer, pellets & bullet. Like this. It makes reloading super fast

Also, get a Power Handle for pushing the load into the chamber. I have one of these and it’s been a great help in loading

    Steve,
I live in Byron and also shoot an Omega. I would be more than happy to help you out. PM me and maybe we could talk about it. I am heading for South Dakota this weekend, but will be back for the rest of the muzzle season.

Hey Jason and Clint thanks for the offer I will send you both PM’s even if one of you can make it before the other you are welcome to join me at the gun range anytime.

Yes the guy at Cabela’s recommended the triple seven so that’s what I got, glad to hear that was a good choice.

Cabelas offers the Power Handle for $10.99 and the U-View Flex Loader for $6.99. Fleet Farm shouldn’t be too far off that mark.

When I started out, I put 2 Triple 7 pellets in with a 250 grain Shockwave slug. I sighted it in at 30 yards. I typically don’t have the opportunity to shoot any further.

My gun NEEDED to be sighted in. Don’t take their word for as gospel when they say it shoots perfect out of the box. My gun was off 1ft to the right and about 2ft too low.

When I got it dialed in at 30yds, I backed up to 100yds. I could drive nails with it at that 100yd range. The only problem was, it shot 6-7″ high. So then I re-sighted it in at 45 yds. There may come a time when I have to shoot 100yds with my gun, and when it does, I have absolute confidence in my Encore.

I have to agree on the Encore… I purchased one two years ago after doing some research and planned to use it for gun and muzzleloader season. After tweaking the loads a bit w/ a 3×9 on it (for gun season) my best group measured 1 1/8″ at 100yds. After putting the 0x on it (for muzzleloader season) the groups opened up to about 2 1/2″. I’ve been very impressed w/ the gun… You can expect great things from the Omega as well. I’ve got several friends who own them and they are excellent shooters, same barrels, different action is all.

    good luck, it’s a blast!

Congrats on the new Omega Scott your first post was at 8:55am, you must have ran out on your luch break and bought one. Guess I am not the only guy who will be breaking one in the week before the season opens
The guy at Cabela’s told me you need to shoot about 100 rounds through it to break it in.

I don’t buy that for a second. I’ve shot mine no where near 100 times. Sounds like he was trying to sell you some extra unneeded ammo.

Good guess Steve!! I will shoot it this week a few times, unit I have it sighted in at 75 yards. I don’t shoot farther than that on most of my stands. Hopefully it is close out of the box.
