Went out Wednesday morning to a stand I have never sat in before. I did help set it up and scout the area so I knew it was a good area with lots of sign. My b-inlaw was not going to be using it as he is on vacation. I decided to give it a whirl. Now that morning was not excatly great as far as conditions go with sleet/snow and high winds but I decided to tough it out anyway. I was in the stand 1/2 hr before sunrise.Around 8:00 I had just finished with the Primos Bleat can and was standing up trying to stay warm when I spot movement out in frt of me. Here comes a deer right downwind and straight at me.I look closer and its the big 10 we have been seeing on our trail cam for the past 2 months. He didn’t seem to notice me at all and was grunting as he came in. I had a scent wick out 15 yrds to the North of the stand right on a tree in an open shooting lane and sure as sh—t he’s going right for it.He goes behind some brush and gives me a chance to shuffle my feet and come to full draw. So far everything is going perfect, but this is Bowhunting and as many know things can go wrong in a hurry. He steps out broadside and checks the wick out. I have the pin right where I want it and let the trigger on my relase go.NOTHING HAPPENS.What the heck I say to myself(ok maybe not those excact words).I tilt my head a bit and whamo the arrow releases right into a tree next to the big guy. He takes off unharmed as I try to figure what happened.I try my release and see that when I squeeze the trigger the jaws don’t pop open.I hold the jaws in my hand and try it again. Just like magic it woirks as designed. Holy Cow a frozen relase prevents me from getting the wall mounter. I will try to get a crack at him this weekend with the rifle but it won’t be the same.Theres always late season. Don’t you just love bowhunting.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune! Keep after him! Hunt long enough or just enough, weird stuff like that happnes. Just try to learn from your mishap? Time for different release??? Keep your release warm in the freezing rain/temps?? Not sure my self, just don’t let it go. Figure it out, so it doesn’t happen again! Just my $.02!

I am a firm believer in Teflon Dri-lube in cold weather. Whether it was my releases or shotguns, down to the firing pin on my rifles! Remington makes some. Also, Militec synthetic oil works well.

I am going to use some Remington dry lube on the release.Lesson learned.I havve hunted in all kinds of nasty weather and have never had a release freeze up.Just gotta keep hunting and putting yourself in postions to see and shoot quailty deer. Never give up. Good luck to all the WI gun hunters this weekend. Knock em down.

    Thanks Rob,
Thats why I love Bowhunting so much. There is always something to be thinking about wether it be wind direction, scent control, shooting lanes, yardage, etc… I see way more deer during the bow season although you don’t always get shots at them its nice to watch and learn. I will be back out when the gun season is over and I will get one of the biggins running the woods. They hide good during the gun season and seem to come out again about two weeks after everyone is going down to Pool 4.Its hard sometimes when its cold and windy but if you put the time in they do come out and give you a chance. Can’t wait.
