I will make a long story short by saying I shot a seven pointer a week ago, and thought I somehow missed this deer. I did drop my .270 during a tumble off a step that let loose going into my stand. I thought the scope might have been knocked whacky. Anyway, I went to the what I thought was the point of impact, and found nothing. No hair, no blood, nothing! I used a slanted branch as a guide to what I thought was the point of impact. Well, I was ready to chalk it up to experience, when that voice in my head said don’t stop. I walked backwards to my stand from that spot, and low and behold, I saw another slanted branch. Walking up to it, I saw the tell tale sign of a bullet going through brush. I did not see this branch when I touched the round off. What evidently happened is the deer was standing directly behind the branch, and when the bullet passed through the alder, it tumbled a hair off course. It impacted the deer just behind the diaphram, and took out the liver, and some gut. Most of the bleeding was internal. There was a large amount of hair, and enough blood to assure me I got a good hit. We tracked this deer for about 100 yards 1 drop at a time, and recovered him.

I know he is not a monster like a lot of them posted on here, but it is typical of bucks in my area. I was sure happy to get him, especially after sharing the tracking and recovery with my son AJ. He learned a lot as well!

November 15, 2005 at 12:19 am #11899Kinda cool, the buck I shot was directly behind where this doe was standing in this picture I took from my camera phone…The doe picture was the evening before I shot the buck. She was standing on his scrape.

November 15, 2005 at 2:49 am #11916I have shot well over 100 deer in my life, and I don’t think I have gut shot any! This one was a deflection, so I will claim that! We pride ourselves on “1 shot, 1 kill.” (Copywrite Robert Deniro.) Except my son A.J., I think he figures he has 20 rounds, and only 1 season! He gets his money’s worth! Five shots this year. Had two buck walk up to him! He got flustered, and we accused him of “Flock shooting!” He got the one he shot though…
