Well the weekend started off pretty darn good. I took a half day on Friday and headed down to Harmony for the weekend. I sat with my bow on Friday night, in a stand that I have been chomping at the bit to sit in. It is on a field edge, deep ravine behind me with two trails that intersect 30 yards off of the field. I finally got seated about 2:30-3:00 and hit the doe bleat. Right away had a young 6 point basket rack bust out of the corn field 200 yards away. All the noise he made getting out I thought he was going to be a lot bigger. But anyway, as soon as he gets out of the corn, another buck come running out. This one is a [censored], 3 points on one side and clean cut on the other. They both run about 50 yards from the field and turn around and look back at the corn. Then I hear some more rustling coming from the standing corn. Three coyotes come trotting out. Well thats all it took for the two young bucks, they bolted into the woods, as fast as I’ve seen a deer run. The coyotes hung around for a while, all playing and jumping on each other, sun bathing, listing to those noisey squirls gathering up winters harvest on the ground behind me. After a little while they took off and headed back into the corn field. About ten minutes later a nice little 8 pointer come bounding out. He had a decent rack, but I could tell he was young. I gave him a grunt to see if he would come a little closer so I could get a better look at him. As soon as he heard my call, he galloped right over to see what all the fuss was about. He ran right to me, stopped under my stand, and was looking in the woods for the would be challenger. I had him in my sites but decided to let him go. There are much bigger deer in the woods and I (thought) I had all weekend with the gun to get him back if I needed to. All in all it was a pretty fun night. Seen those three bucks, two does and the coyotes. I was absolutely pumped for slug opener on Saturday morning. Well I went back to that same stand in the morning and low and behold I didn’t see another bleeping deer all weekend. I even spent the whole day in the woods yesterday except for two hours back in the shack for a bite to eat and a little football. So like the old saying goes, Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. Hopefully I get another chance this weekend with the bow. Good luck to every one out there this season. Later.
