My oldest son is going to be 12 just in time for next deer season, so I am looking at getting him a youth model 20g combo with a slug and shotgun barrel, probebly a Remington.

Any comments on using a 20g for deer hunting? Rec. slugs?

    Max. distance for killing?

Excellent choice. Or Winchester model. Both are great for deer hunting , I use mine still and guess what, It still kills deer with half the slug. You can even put a 3×9 scope on them without worying too much about it breaking from shock. I STRONGLY RECCOMEND A 20 GUAGE. Easier on your shoulder also. This makes pulling the trigger more comfortable too. FISHINFOOL

    OH , GOOD LUCK HUNTING

20 guage is just fine for deer, but as far as the slugs go try different brands…..you will see different patterns with different brands. My 12 guage for example likes the Federal 127’s…I’ve shot about five different brands and my gun seems to like these the best. Range? with any shot gun esspecially a new hunter I would try to keep them at a max of 75 yards. Just my $.02 Brad

As far as kill distance. If hes 12, I wouldnt have him taking long shots anyways. Make him responsible for his shots and not just taking pot shots that wound. I believe mine is deadly at 100yrds but almost all woods shots are less than 75 yrds.

I bought a Remington 870 Wingmaster in 20GA with the slug barrel and sights. I put a scope on it and sighted it in at the local gun club. I was impressed with the accuracy, and light recoil. We used Remington slugs and did not try other brands. That gun took deer at ranges from 20 yards to 100 yards and was just as deadly as my 12GA. You’ll be happy with the 20…

    Browning 20 GA w/Winchester Super-X slugs.

Kills as well as the 12 GA without the huge holes…especially if you hit the shoulders or hams. Neck shots work great.

The 12 GA seems to have the advantage at 80 yards plus for stopping power. I’d rather keep my hearing and just get the deer to come in closer.

    hi Kirt,
if the barrel is a rifled barrel, you should try the Federal Premium Barnes Expander Sabot slugs. I use them in my 12ga (scoped), and it is a tack driver, and you just can’t say that very often with a shotgun. send me a PM, did you every sell your 115 ??

My wife and oldest daughter uses an 870 20 for deer they have no problems filling their tags. They either shoot brenekkes when we can get them or remingtons both in 3″ Going to test the new federal slugs designed for smooth bores here shortly.

If I hunted again in a slug only area, I would get a fully rifled 20 gauge with a scope and go to town.

Lots less kick and plenty of power for any deer out to 125 yards +.

During firearms season I know carry a .44 mag revolver and a muzzleloader normally. In the even I carry a shot gun I still carry the same gun that I have been using since I was about 14. That means almost 20 years of deer hunting. It is a smoothbore, vent rib 20ga. pump. I recommed ACTIV slugs. These are heavy for a 20ga. and very accurate. I have killed a couple of deer over 100 yards away with one shot. These deer were stationary. I have also shot the Brenneke slugs and they work well also. I tried a rifled barrel on a 12 ga. for one year and went back to what works for me. It should be noted that with little exception the 20ga. slug has a flatter trajectory than it’s bigger brother the 12 bore. Some still argue with me about the killing power of the 20 ga.. I say the proof is in the pudding.
