Been Bow Hunting a private woods for 24-25 years. First 15 or so were all to myself. Then for about the last 10 a landowners cousin hunted it as well. We didn’t get along but we did respect each others hunting and stand locations so it was a workable situation. He was a hot head and it took some time but finally got himself booted out. I thought I’d be hunting alone again but to my surprise the landowner let 2 different cousins in this time. He advised me he instructed them to hunt the half of the woods occupied by the previous cousin that got the boot. I’m thinking rats but said ok thanks for letting me know. The cousins and I met each other the other day and I told him we shouldn’t have any problems and that he would be hunting the North half of the woods but he replied in not so many words that he liked what he saw and was going to hunt wherever he pleased. Well — the 2 new guys are all over the woods. One eve he came walking thru the woods 50 yards past my stand with 45 min left of hunting. One of them put his stand 120 yards upwind of my permanent ladder stand on the same trail my stand is located on. I confronted the landowner and advised this wasnt’ working to well,he said he didn’t want to get me upset and would talk with the cousins and hoped we could get along. Later I spoke with the landowner again and he said the guy said had some nice pics on his trail camera and doesn’t want to move his stand and said he hopes we can get along and doesn’t really want to get involved. Any suggestions what would you do?

I think you said it all in the subject box. I was in a similar situation not too many years ago. I basicly smiled, grinded my teeth and went on my merry way. I still hunted the land but stayed a ways away from where they were. It actually improved my rifle hunting! They were a bunch of citidiots and knew nothing of true hunting between the cigar smoke, tromping from stand to stand, late morning and early evenings and the one man drives they made to each other….I reaped all the benifits! For those 2 years I shot wall mounters and the guy hunting the adjointing land shot a dandy too. After those 2 years I havn’t seen hide nor hair of them. So I’m back to the land my self. You never know hopefully it will work out for you.

I’ll try to post a pic of one of the two I shot

*Blood is thicker than water*.. be careful on what you do if you dont want to lose hunting priviledge to the land… It generally takes something pretty drastic to get a family member kicked out.

I’m kind of hot headed myself at times when I’m disrespected.. but I give people their space when it comes to hunting… in this case, I might turn their new stand location into the local *urinal* every time I exit the woods, or be sure to walk by their stand on a regular basis. If you become nuesence(sp?) at that stand location, they will soon realize they likely wont get a deer there, and move.

Either that or put a portable up right next to their stand and get there early.. simply reply that you heard there were nice deer over here on the trail camera.

    But.. I’m kind of hot-headed

I used to be a die-hard deer hunter. It was what got me going in the fall.

But over the years, I keep loosing and loosing more and more private land to hunt on, where now, I’m hunting a 20 acre parcel. Thank God it host some big bucks.

I get each and every land owner saying every year: Nope, sorry, got the son-in-law who wants to try deer hunting after seeing that nice buck you got.” OR: “Got the cousin who saw your big buck taken last year, he is going to hunt it this year and doesn’t want anyone in there”. OR: “Since you have had such great luck deer hunting on my land, I’ve decided I’m going to hunt it myself.”…………….These are all “family friends and distant relatives”.

The other land that I can hunt on, has every other hunter in the world that can also hunt it. These are the guys that start doing the deer drives at first light on the first day of hunting…….

It is just a zoo down in my area……..

    I’m going fishing!!!!!!

It has gotten to the point, where I haven’t been excited about deer hunting for the last 3 years……..

2 years ago, I walked on one tresspasser, who was hunting and “pleasing” himself……..Yes, the guy was taking care of business out in the woods……..FREAK!!!!!!!

I’m honestly, just tired of it……

Now I have heard of some different ways to stay entertained in the stand, but that is a little over the line

I have to agree with the blood is thicker then water. I would not say anything else to the owner of the land, for fear he will not let you hunt anymore in fear of pissing off his family. There are some bad hunters out there, but I find those clowns are usually done hunting long before I am tired of it. Stick it out, and I think you will find when the weather gets a little colder, you will have the woods to youself.

    Good Luck

yup that the growing city for you, it sucks

same situation in my woods, the more success I have, and the more I try to keep it quite the worse it gets…

cousins, landowner, friends, ect, they come out of the wood work when you get great results, the key is to keep quite and hope the new guys don’t know their from a hole in the ground and will soon get discourged and leave… the ultimate test of pacients
