Best Cover Scent

Like many archery hunters I use a cover scent that masks my human scent. I put it on my boots before I head to my stand to help cover my trail to the stand. I spray just a little on the base of the tree I am in as well. I have used fox pee as a cover scent in the past but the deer seem to take notice of the fox pee more than they do coon pee. I figure this is because fox have become very rare compared to racoon and deer aren’t as used to the smell of fox urine nearly as much as they are to coon urine. I switched to coon pee and it seems to work just fine. Now I have heard of another cover scent that is reported to be the very best cover scent available and it contains no urine and is not offensive to the olfactory. Walnuts in the husks. Take walnuts still in the husks and place them in a box around 2′ x 3′ at the bottom. Cover the bottom of the box with the walnuts. Before you head to the woods put your boots on and stomp around in the box of walnuts. The smell of the walnuts is very strong and from what I understand masks human scent better than varmit urine. I’ve heard of guys walking through fresh cow manure to mask their scent. I would imagine that walnut smell has to be better than sitting in your stand smelling cow manure or coon urine all day. Plus the walnut smell belongs in the woods. I’ve got a huge walnut tree in the backyard and every year I let the squirrels have the nuts but this year I might try to use them as a cover scent.

Sound like a good idea if there is alot of walnuts in the area you hunt. I think you need to match the scent in the area you hunt. I have used fox&coon urine in the past. I dont use them anymore, because it seems to draw the attention of the deer. I have been using scentaway spays and earth scent wafers .

I’ve been using a combination of bacon grease, onions, beer farts, and cigar smoke. It doesn’t seem to work all that well.

I’m with Lonewolf. I used to mask my scent with urine, but found it to be more of an attention attracter. I have gone with using scent eliminators/killers and by far have improved my ability to go undetected and have beens seeing way more deer. Just my $.02

I have been using a product called Deer Dander for about 3 years now. Its seems to do the trick.I just spray a LITTLE on the bottom of my boots and a tad on the top before heading to the stand.I have had deer come down my trail and not even think twice. Along with that I store all my clothes in an airtight(As much as possible) box with an earth scent wafer in it and I also use Scent killer spray, body and hair wash. All this seems to work well for me as I have many encounters with deer close up and they always appear relaxed and unaware of presense until the arrow whacks them

i use the scent killer spray. i hang my clothes outside about 2 days before i plan on hunting and spray them with scent killer. just before i leave i will put them in a air tight container until i go hunting. just before i leave the truck i agian spray everything down including my boots. i also use the fresh earth scent waffers. i have really noticed the difference between wearing rubber boots and normal boots. the rubbers are a lot better for not holding scent. My $0.02

My dad has used walnuts for a long time. It seems to work fine. I use a lot of neutralizers and earth blends my self. I’ve had good luck with the DEER SENSE sent sticks too. They work great when the wind is right. I’ve had them walk right up to the bucket and lick!

I used to use urine like everyone else. I have not done so in probably 10 years. If I am hunting a farm with cattle nearby, I will still step in a nice fresh cow pie before walking to my stand. Now on to walnuts. Before scent-lok and the scent killer sprays, my buddy and I used to store our clothes in airtight containers and throw some walnuts in with it. Be careful if you do this. It definately works, but as the walnut husks break down, or that black stuff seeps out of the dried hull, it will stain your clothes. I still have some of these clothes, no longer stored in airtight containers. (Because they do not fit me anymore and I do not wear them.) They still have the stains and the walnut odor despite many washings. I am confident that your walnut idea is a good one for your boots.
