I have heard that older racks, used for rattling make a different sound tone, than fresher (as in, newer) antlers. have heard that some of the artificial rattling antlers are pretty descent, and they don’t dry out, so no tone change. good luck. Jack..

I some times use the Primos artificial Horns and they have some good sound to them Brian. I have brought in small and big bucks with them.

I’ve used the Primos horns myself, but not yet a response.

I have a rattlin bag that I have used and rattled in several small bucks using the bag.

I have also used a small set antlers (100-110 class) and the work well also.

I think your luck depends on whether or not the deer are willing to respond, more than they type of calling antlers you are using.

I agree totally. The horns are the minor factor of bringing in a buck, but a factor non the less. The area (buck/doe ratio)and time of year is the biggest factor in my mind.

I also have brought bucks in usingf a bag and sometimes a little easier to carry and handle in a stand. I have watched Real Tree Staffers pull some big pigs using a bag. I alos think it depends on the “Rattler” also. I have been in the woods and head some Awful music before. In fact, I have said to myself ‘What the heck was that” after a rattling sequence. Remember to use trees, branches and brush to make addtional noise when possible.

that is a good point to bring up What does everyone do that hunt from a stand? being 15’+ up?
I will either start off in the morning the first 2 hours or the last 2 hours of light. I will start each session off with a snort-wheez and have grunts mixed in while rattling. I usually take the first session quitely for not quite 30sec, incase there is one around, then sit on it for about 20 min the another session lasting about 30-45 seconds turning the volume up to a mid range. wait another 30 min the last one is with the volume completley cranked lasting all of 45 sec and then that will be it for the day/night

I do consider myself an aggressive hunter, I like to use decoys, rattle, scents, mock scrapes I throw the whole bag at em’ throughout the season when the timing is right, I usually don’t hunt a lot the first 2 weeks but if I do I don’t do much, find a trail from food to bedding and thats it.Later into the first 2 weeks of october I’ll start using dominate buck urine around and by the end of the second week I am making mock scrapes. This year should be PRIME with the full moon on the 15th of October, hopefully well get a dusting of snow by then as well

by middle-end of october though november I will use does scents and them back to dominate buck urine by dec to the end, once again focusing on food more than anything.
    good luck all

Is this the same Gutpile that caused all the cammotion at Schmigs this spring? Adams bro? Seems I remember some talk about fishing Mille Lacs this fall?? I have rattling horns up the wazoo but parting with horns is soooo hard to do. Maybe you can talk me into it?
