I have noticed on another forum I glance at once in a while they get a group of guys together and split each other up into even teams and make a deer hunting contest sorta out of it.Now I am not sure how they score the points if it is by the score of just bucks or if does get points as well…but anyway just curious if any of you guys would be interested in maybe we kinda start something like that here before the opener just for the fun of it and maybe some bragging rights lol Lets just post on this and see if maybe we would be interested in this idea on the board here to get it rolling and maybe get us a little more edge to get out in the woods and get us a deer if we need anymore the way it is lol…anyways just figured I would run it by everyone and see what you guys all think of the idea…Big E

Ya if I can get someone to help me line up some rules would be more than happy too. Sorry I havent replied just got back from a thirsty thursday from Winona my last big go around before hunting season and man do I feel like…. well we wont go there it was a good time till today but ya how should we work this I am thinking that we will need to make it most points with bow and arrow, muzzleloader in the middle and riffle/shotgun not worth quite as much…also should it just be say 5 points for fawn/button buck (same thing)…10 points for doe and say 20 or 25 for bucks just kinda hard that way cause teams should get points for the bigger the trophy so otherwise we could also make it by weight for does and fawns and inches on the rack for bucks but not everyone has access to a scale and someone to score their deer possibly. So any input would be great be nice to get atleast 5 teams of 5 atleast for a minimum or something but any input is needed just kinda something i figured we could all throw together to tempt a guy even more the help manage these does too anyways I should be around all weekend when I am not playin softball so will be checkin the site quite often…thanks guys..Erick

Eric when you say 5 teams of 5 do you mean 5 guys on one team? That might be difficult for some guys as allot of guys like to hunt alone. Would the 5 guys have to hunt together or just form a team hear on IDA and combine there scores. Might be simpler just to have individual scores rather than teams. As for points for fawns or button bucks I know that there will be some that do not agree with me on this but I do not feel we should award points for fawns or button bucks I would rather encourage guys to practice selective harvest. Just my two cents.

Ya its up to you guys I am just tryin to think of some ideas here…ya i agree witht he fawns and buttons but wasnt for sure I for one choose not to harvest them anymore made to many whoops in the past think year and a half old doe but anyways we could either do it individually or 5 guys to a team combining points to mke it interesting as well. So how do u guys wanna do this then by just set points for buck and doe or should we go by inches for bucks and weight for does then any ideas? Also with the doe thing I dunno how we should do this since some areas may not be in the intensive harvest area so should it be first antlered deer harvested and first doe or biggest doe…..also with the team thing I would post a sign up sheet on here then next week before opener I would take all the names and throw them in a hat and draw teams. So I guess the two things we need to sort are A) Do we want teams or indvdual scoring and B) How should we score them by inches on bucks and weight on does or set points I personally like inches and weight cause it rewards for your harvest but need some input so we all agree. Hung three stands tonight and sat out for a while had 5 does within range of me 30 yds and less startin to feel the itch boys and gals.

I seen this type of format on a trapping site and here is what I gathered from the idea.

You would have a team of 5 people or you could go individually. Teams do not have to hunt together, they could be from different states for that fact.

Points would be given for each animal taken. The reason for points instead of actual weights or antler scores, is because whitetail can’t realistically be scored the same as muleys on racks or weights.

The format would be something like 5 points for fawns, 10 for does, and 25 for bucks. All forms of weapons and seasons apply.

I personally think we should be given points for fawns as well as any other deer. The reason being is the area I used to hunt was so ovverpopulated with does and fawns, that they too needed to be thinned down to try and balance the herd. I agree with letting smaller bucks walk and I now do so. But, I also do not think that a person can or should make that decision for others.

Back to the topic at hand The “contest” would be for fun and bragging rights. Pics would need to be taken of the harvested animal and posted. Also a camera with a date stamp would be ideal for this purpose.

I would be game for it if we could get things going.
