Well, here it is, less than a month until bow opener, and I can’t decide what to do this year. Usually, by now I am fired up and have been shooting 2-3 nights a week both indoor and an awesome 3-D range. This year I have not had the bow out yet
I am just now getting the “desire” to want to bowhunt. One big issue is a friend that I hunt and shoot with is over in Iraq and will not be back for at least another 6 months. So without someone else to shoot, scout, and hunt with, things just aren’t the same. I know, bowhunting is a solo sport. But, we helped each other scout, hang stands, and practiced together. We hunt the same land but we have our own “areas”. The safety factor was nice in case somebody didn’t show up at the end of the hunt, we knew where to look. It was also great to have somebody to help drag and to share in the exitement of the harvest.
This year the hunting land is still up in the air. We hunted a 700 acre property that was private and is loaded with deer. The owners are considering selling it off into small sections. I prefer not to hunt the public land due to too much pressure. Then again, I have been considering building a small lightweight trailer that I could attach to my bicycle. I could then carry my bow, stand, and clothes in the trailer. Then, if I did harvest a deer, I could put it on the trailer and haul it out Not sure if that would be kosher due to the area being a well used bike trail. That particular area is all flat and 7 miles of swamp and woodlands. Are there any guys around the LaCrosse area that are new to bowhunting or want to get started? I would be willing to give them a helping hand if you want to try some of the local public grounds. I have not shot any bucks with a bow, but I have gotten a good number of does.

Well today I got the Diamond out and went to the archery shop/range to finally get some shooting in. It actually felt good to get the bow back in my hands After a little shooting and getting the muscles loosened up, I was shooting very tight groups out to 20 yards. I have decided it is time to put the boat away for awhile and get the fire going for bowhunting. With gas prices the way they are, shooting and hunting is a lot cheaper I still need to check my inventory to see what I need to stock up on. I have a great place to hunt that is public, but, I would need a small boat or a canoe to get away from the crowds. I have always wanted to try this area by going in with a boat, and this year I just might actually try it. I know there has to be some bruiser bucks back in the swamps. This state land is 6 square miles with many little streams and a decent sized river surrounded by hardwoods and marsh areas. Let the games begin

Sounds like you are off to a good start AmWatson, I have always wanted to try floating a river for deer hunting, I have heard this can be very effective. One of these years I am going to give it a try.

Tony-I am sure you know where I am talking about The girls and I took a bike ride through the area today. Not a whole lot of sign, but with thick vegetation, things are deceiving right now. I would like to find an old beater boat or canoe that I could put the 8 hp motor on. I still love the Diamond and how it shoots Now I am going to go shoot 2-3 times a week and get my long range shooting locked in. Although I have never had a shot past 25 yards, but it is still good to know I can make a 40 yard shot if needed.

Got a little shooting done today and shot pretty good considering I haven’t done much lately I also tried to scout out some new territory yesterday, but the skeeters almost drained me Oh well, I will get something figured out. I did stop long enough to get to listen to a couple of my favorite sounds. The squirrels chatter echoing through the trees and the caw of the black birds. There is something about those sounds that bring on an almost primal feeling within me. When I get stressed out, I try and bring those sounds out from the minds memory bank and it is so calming. Most of the time just the sounds are enough to make the days hunt worthwhile, even if a deer is not seen. It is also cool just to watch the squirrels and their crazy antics. Those little critters work their butts of in the fall chasing each other and burying nuts. I am sure glad I am not a squirrel
