I’ve got a chance to hunt in Kansas on private ground about 50 miles outside of KC. I’m still waiting for more details, like what county etc… Wondering if we have anyone who knows this area at all? Any chance of running into one of the famed Kansas whitetails in this area or should we be looking for land in other areas??

    Thanks!!!

John I have a friend who is from Kansas and still owns land there, I sent him the link to your post. I will let you know what I find out. Kansas is on my list of places to hunt as well but I suppose the first thing I should do is get a rifle.

Can’t really go wrong with Kansas. Which direction from KC is the land in question? Kansas is a tough draw. But one thing is, landowners can sign over their landowner tags to nonresidents. Most go for a pretty penny, but if you know someone there that is willing to do it for you for nothing, that would be awesome. Then you wouldn’t have to worry about the draws. Kansas tags are going up to $321 this year. I’m talking bow hunting, is that what you plan on doing?

I haven’t decide on what weapon to take down there. Probably bow. I’m still sketchy on details.

I’ve got guaranteed land out in NW Kansas, that’s a for sure deal, but another 4 hours past KC. My understanding the land near KC is within 50 miles inside Kansas. I’ll share more when I get more details.

I believe Kansas also made a change to their archery permits this year too. They are going to be zone specific this year instead of statewide. So you would have to apply for the place in NW or KC.

Here is the info I received from my friend.

    Quote:

I grew up in western KS and still own land there. There were no deer or antelope out west when I was growing up.

Eastern KS is quite a lot like SE MN with a lot of rolling hills and should be good white tail hunting.

Western KS now has mule deer migrating into it. My Step Dad said we have the biggest mule deer herd he has ever seen grazing on our farm. I never saw them when I was back there but two of my kids have brought pictures of the herd back.

Eastern KS would definitely be the best bet for hunting. I have seen signs of antelope restoration in the Flint Hills region between Kansas City and Witchita along I-35.

OK, so here is the scoop. I’ve got permission to bow hunt these two counties: Brown and Johnson.

The Johnson land is basically south metro KC, 80 acre heavily wooded plot with a ton of deer. The brown land has a good population also, but not as high as the Johnson.

I’ve also go permission to hunt Norton. This is western KS. I don’t think it’s nearly as wooded etc. I could rifle hunt this ground.

Any opinions on the areas?? I’m starting my research.

    Thanks!!

    John

Are you talking the town of Norton or Norton County? I had a job offer up there a few years ago that I turned down. It is pretty flat with smaller rolling hills. There is also some wooded riverbottoms. While I was interviewing for the job the employer was telling me about all the hunting opportunities there. I did get to see a very nice 10 point whitetail and a bunch of pheasants. You could bowhunt it, but in that country a rifle would be a better choice. There wasn’t much cover at all to do a spot and stalk. But, the deer were plentiful according to the guys I talked to
