After Spending Christmas at home with my Family, I headed out to South Western South Dakota to spend New Years with my Girlfriends Family in the Black Hills. Believe me not as bad as it may sound . Her Dad and two brothers love to hunt also. It happens that their Late Doe Season opens on New Years Day! So to spend qaulity time with her family I HAD to Hunt New Years Day !

New Years Days Morning Tyler (her Brother)and I set up on the base of the big hill in the picture on the next post. With only seeing a Coyote in the first hour of light we began our climb of the hill. I have never hunted in terrain like this. I have only seen it on tapes and the outdoor channel. This was a unbelievable experience that I will never forget. As soon as we reached the top ridge of the hill, Travis (her other brother) shot to the North of us. So Tyler and I tight roped the steep ridge on top down to where Stacie and Travis were. That morning Travis and Tyler each shot a mule deer. With Travis shooting a doe and Tyler harvesting a wounded fawn. Look at the shot that Tyler put on this fawn if you can see in the pic. What a head ache.

That afternoon Travis Tyler and I went back out to try to fill the reamining 2 tags. We walked some draws with no luck and then while glassing a ridge we seen a group of about 15 or so Muleys. So we began planning out our approach and started our climb once again. There was one whopper Muley buck in this group as we closed in on 200 yards from the group. Shooting with such a steep angle they wanted to get a little closer so we went down a little, so we would be out of sight. We got out in front a little bit farther and the climbed up again. This time we were within a 50 yards as the Muleys made there way by us. Except for now they knew something was up and started to run by us. Travis having the best shot at the group ended up harvesting 2 does. They eneded within 20 yards of each other. As the sun was setting on the Hill side, I thought to my self this is truly awesome. That being said, I did not even carry a gun or even see a big buck harvested this hunt. But this is deinietly one I will never forget. Not to mention the view WOW! . Wish I would have brought my camera up there with me. By the time we got the Muleys to the truck and back home to a camera it was dark so no pics were taken of the last 2 does shot. But here is a pic of the morning deer and a pic of the hill where the deer were harvested and I gained a new experince!

I miss hunting the black hills. It was an annual trip for about 14 years before I moved here. I love going out there in Sept also, shorts/tshirt weather, no bugs, sit on the deck and drink beer and watch the sun set on the porch of the cabin. Thanks for sharing!!
