Bob,
I used to use a dripper with Golden Estrus in it. It does work to a point. Most deer that passed the dripper would pause to give it a sniff, even the does. I do not believe that it brought any deer in to the area but it could slow the deer down enough to give you a shot. I don’t use it any longer as I seem to see just as many deer without it. Instead I use the felt scent tabs or cotton balls with doe estrus and locate them in my shooting lanes. They are spread out all around my stand instead of the one dripper.
Actually, after this past weekend I don’t know if I will be using scents again. I had 4 felt scent tabs with doe estrus surronding my stand. I hunted 4 days and most of the deer that passed my stand didn’t even stop to sniff the scent. I am a firm believer in a cover scent though. I used to use fox urine on my boots but the deer really noticed the scent. I think it is because there are so few fox around these days and it was a scent they weren’t used to. Now I use coon urine and the deer were walking all around my tree this weekend and I didn’t spook a one.Eyehunter

JiraPosts: 517November 8, 2004 at 10:46 pm #4310I use mock-scrape in my drips OVER REAL scrapes and they work excellent.
Couple tips..
1. When you go out to hang a drip bottle, make sure it and you are scent free with carbon blast or equiv.
2. Wear rubber boots.
3. Hang the drip bottle ABOVE and to the SIDE of the scrape. Remember, that branch has scent on it… don’t disturb it.
4. Add 1oz a week to the dripper.
5. Stay off the trail on your way in and out.Using this technique I have come back to find bucks dig huge holes under my mock scrape drips… and sometimes you get a shot at them.
Also, I should note that this has worked best for me pre-rut.
As far as other scents, I am (as of this year) a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of “Deer Sense” burning sticks. Follow the directions in the pack. Man-o-man do they work. I had 23 deer within 30 yards in only 3 stands. This from a stand I usually see 0-2 a stand. Unbelievable.

November 9, 2004 at 3:36 am #4326I’ve used it on mock scrapes with noticable results but not much luck for bringing in a buck with doe in estrous. Like mentioned don’t touch the licking branch and hang to the side of it. I am as careful as i can be to keep the dripper clean of human scent. I use a piece of wire bent into a hook attached to the dripper so i can just walk up and hang it and not spend much time by the scrape so i leave as little scent as possible plus checking for large hoof prints. I’ve used coon scent for years and a good shot of it on my boots every moring i go to my stand. I use a fresh unscented drag rag with fresh doe in heat lure with the best results dragging it from my truck to my stand hoping a buck will have his nose to the ground and pick it up. I remember one day after a dry period that i seen a buck with his nose to the ground trailing a hot doe like a coonhound. It had snowed a little the night befor, about a 1/4 inch and was melting but it was enough to hold the scent of the hot doe and he was turning in circles trying to find which way she went. After he found her trail leading away he was full bore after her. He had lost all control of his own safety and was head over heels for this doe. I’ve used a drag rag every since with good results but have yet to have a really nice buck come to my stand even after thinking that my scent might be on the rag and hanging the drag rag in a bush within shooting range and not by my tree. Drippers do work. Cottonballs are sterile and human scent free and can be soaked in a fresh bottle of estrous and then are handy to pull out and hang on a bush or limb by your stand or where you want to pull deer from. Good luck

November 9, 2004 at 2:20 pm #4327My belief is scents work well during pre rut when the bucks are moving but the does are not ready yet. Once the chasing starts, nothing seems to work. The does determine where the bucks are going to go and often most of the bucks you see have abandoned their scape lines and are off chasing from doe to doe. During this time of the rut your best bet is patience…put your time in.
This weekend I saw a lot of small bucks, all but one were chasing does. My dad and brother-in-law each harvested big mature bucks chasing does. I will be heading back up North Thursday looking for that big boy again. Good luck to all.
