I need help. At least that is what my wife tells me. Anyways.

Here is my situation. I am sitting in my blind, working the rattle bag, and grunting, when about 60-70 away, I spot a deer. This is not the first time this has happened, but always has ended with the same result. No shot! I can not no matter what I do, get these deer any closer. I consider myself a pretty good shot with the bow, but there is no way I am even going to consider taking a shot like that. I can’t even get these crazy animals, to come 30 yards closer. Am I doing something wrong? What else can I do? I am going crazy, and can’t figure it out. Please help.

Have you considered moving your stand closer to where the deer are traveling?? If they are consistantly coming through the same area, and don’t want to defect to where you are…go to them

Also…are you using plenty of scent eliminator?

I think the biggest mistake most of us make is our scent coverage. If you are hunting with the slightest cross wind, it can ruin things. I always hunt the stands with the wind in my face.

Second thing, when the deer are getting closer, soften your grunts etc. I know this obvious, but keep your movement down to a minimum when grabbing the bow etc.. Does your stand creak/moan as you shift your weight??

Keep at it, it will all come together one day and the effort you’ve put out will be well worth it.

    Good Luck!!!

I have moved closer, and just haven’t had time to use it since I have moved. Obvisously not using enough scent blocking.

no creeks or moans, that I can hear anyway. The topic of scent, made me think of another question. I have been lacking in scent blocking, mostly because of the blind that I am in. I have recently cut down 3 giant Oaks, due to Oak Wilt , and I took a bunch of that brush and made my blind. Can that much scent get out? Will the wind matter that much. I have been out on some pretty windy days, and I really don’t even feel the wind. I am definetly going to keep at it. For some reason, having this go on, has just made me more determined.

Where do you store your camo? I keep mine in a seperate tote away from anything in the house and away from any other possible “contaminents”….and I probably use waaaay to much scent eliminator.

Do you wear a face mask…a lot of scent is lost through the head/hair….?

I have a seperate room in my house that is just for my hunting stuff. I like to say that it is a climate controled room, but. This room has it’s own de humidifier, because it is in the basement, and there is so much scent eliminator in that room, I could hide a steak in it, and let the dog in, and he would never find it. Anyways, I have been airing my hunting clothes out now since last weekend, and will see what happens on Saturday.
