October 26, 2004 at 2:04 am #4095Corn is only 6.50$ per 100# here Jer. In both Wis & Mich in border country here you are allowed no more than 5 gallons on the ground at any time.

October 26, 2004 at 11:29 am #4098That’s a good deal Tom.. I’m not even sure if it is even 5 gallons allowed, but you are allowed more than one bait size if the property if larger than 40 acres , AND if the bait sites are at least 100 yards apart. So we are legal with what we do….
Also, Baiting is PROHIBITED in these WI counties:
Adams, Calumet, Columbia, Crawford, Dane, Dodge, grane, Green, Iowa county, Jefferson, Juneau, Kenosha, Lafayette, Manitowoc, Marquette, Milwaukee, Portage, racine, Richland, Rock, Sauk, Sheboygan, Vernon, Walworht, Waukesha, and Waushara counties.
(This does not include food plots)

October 26, 2004 at 2:59 pm #4100In my eyes and everyone at our deer camp, thinks that bait should be prohibited in every county in every state. Bait is a sign of a bad hunnter or a lazy one.

October 26, 2004 at 3:16 pm #4101PK..
i hope you aren’t accusing anyone of being lazy or a bad hunter, that would be irresponsible….We work hard at trying to getting deer to move through the land we hunt…How is baiting any differnet than having corn or actual food plots growing on your land??
It’s not like baiting for bear where you throw a hunk of meat out and wait for it to come in….And it’s not like we’re Ted Nugent w/a deer stand over a full time feeder..
1. you don’t know the land that we hunt….It’s semi hilly and really is nothing more than a transitional area between bedding and “true” feeding areas. IE. the neighbors corn field for deer only…
I think you have the wrong idea on what baiting is all about….We throw down some corn just to see and hopefully get deer to move through a certain area…We don’t sit and ring a dinner bell and then shoot away…
I really take offense to your post…Not everyone has perfect or ideal land that has a monster herd of deer on it to hunt for….We make due w/what we have and if corn can help move a few more deer through or land…so be it.
Should we not use calls either? or rattle? or estrus scents?or do drives??

October 26, 2004 at 6:00 pm #4104It is my believe that you let the DNR set the rules if its legal then do it otherwise we open a can of worms thats not fair to everyone. There is always going to be contraversey how about robo ducks, inline muzzel loaders the list is endless

October 26, 2004 at 6:02 pm #4105Corn is 1.95 a bushel here off the wagon . Bushel is between 55 and 60 lbs depending on test weight . If you know a farmer and arent afraid to walk alittle you can walk around the outside of a picked field and probably get all the ears you need. Most farmers would not mind if asked . As you open the fields up a certain amount of stalks are knocked over as you pick off the end rows in the corners of the field. Apples can also be good ,but you cannot bait in Iowa

October 26, 2004 at 9:11 pm #4110A, you better not be puting meat out for bears in wisconsin. B you want to talk about land. I have never hunted private land for deer, our cabin is on the border of the clark county forest. No one in our cabin baits and everyone seemed to harvest a buck never the less except. not a piece of corn in sight. It isnt that hard to figure out where the deer are and arnt . I realy dont care if you bait or not, i just fell that “ring the dinner bell” isnt necessary to harvest a deer.

October 26, 2004 at 9:31 pm #4111Well let me first just say I sure am very lucky to have some excellent friends that let me hunt w/them on their land, cause i don’t have my own cabin or my own private land.
i don’t bear hunt, it was an analogy..
I also don’t think baiting isn’t necessary to harvest a deer either, that wasn’t the issue, but you calling those that do lazy and bad hunters was(ie. ME)…We spend a lot of time surveying the land for signs of deer, their patters etc…we’ve only put bait down a few times, and the main reason for that was to get them on camera….
if you don’t like somebody’s practice, whether if be fishing or hunting, despite it being completely legal, that’s more than fine, you can say so, disagree all you want, but don’t start name calling…it’s just not right…
we’re cool though..
