Got another deer with the bow

After a miserable outing in the duck blind this morning, I decided to hit the stand again. I haven’t been able to bowhunt during the week lately due to work and, well, too much time in the duck blind. Anyway, I made my way to the stand, taking my time, due to not wanting to sweat too much, dang weather anyway . Well, I sure missed the woods. The squirrels kept me entertained, they were out in full force chasing each other around and gathering food. They are pretty comical little critters. I always laugh when I see a big fox or gray squirrel running for their lives when being chased by a little tiny pine squirrel , I mean they are at least twice as big as the pine . While I was busy watching the squirrels, movement from the cornfield caught my eye. Sure enough a fawn had come out to feed on the corn. I watched this deer feed for around 45 minutes or so before I decided to try and call it in and shoot it. I got out “the can” and gave it to turns to see what kind of reaction I could get from the fawn. Well the reaction was instant, it came running through the cornfield and right into the woods where I was perched. I thought she might have caught my scent on the trail because she stopped and had her nose to the ground. I thought for sure she was going to turn tail and be gone. Well she just turned her head and started licking her legs and then started down the trail toward me. When she got to 27 yards and broadside, I sent the already drawn arrow sailing. I was a little forward and then simualtaneously I heard the “crack” and the deer dropped in its tracks . I thought, “What the heck?”. The arrow placement was a little forward but perfect behind the shoulder. I still really don’t know why it reacted like it did. The hardest part of that was having to watch the deer die right in front of me. I could have sent another arrow, but two arrows in the lungs is not going to speed the process up any faster. Man it was tough, I had to turn away, I felt so bad at that moment. Dragging her back to the truck was nice as it was all flat and downhill . When I took it to the registration station some drunk guy was outside the bar while the kid was registering another nice doe. He came up and looked at mine and laughed saying, ” Can it get any smaller?”. I looked at him and asked, ” Do you bowhunt?”. He just said every once in awhile. I told him to me any deer is a trophy. I also explained to him how much damage they have done to the cornfields this year. He argued with me that there are not that many deer where he hunts. I told him the county where I hunted and he then agreed there might be more deer there. I have watched the deer and the coon from my stand destroy large areas of corn, literally take the corn stalks and flatten them. I guess I just don’t understand why I even tried to justify taking a fawn. It was my decision and that is all that matters. We all have different feelings about what we should and should not harvest. If this was gun hunting, it would have walked. If it was a smaller buck, it would have walked. Why? Because those are decisions I have made for myself. I had a fawn last year during gun season that was no more than 2, yes 2, feet from the end of my rifle barrel while I was sitting on the ground. It stood right there looking the other direction. I could have pulled the trigger at anytime and took it home. I just looked at the deer and watched it breathing heavy with terror in its eyes. The guys on the neighbors property were doing a drive when this deer came by me. I still cannot beleive how close that deer was and had no idea I was there. So I am not a blood thirsty killer. Anyway, I didn’t get any pics of this deer because I didn’t want any negative reactions to taking a fawn on here. I guess it is a touchy area to some.

Congrats with the deer. The guy at the station sounds like a real dick. I have taken a few fawns my self nothing wrong with that at all. I know what u mean about watching them die like that. Almost not human no to feel something. I have had to go finish a deer before. I got a 7 pointer last sarurday with my muzzleloader. Have since let 2 button bucks and a 6 go by with my bow. If I wouldnt have notice the fawn was a button buck i would have taken him with my doe tag but decided to let it go since i knew it was a buck. Once again congrants.

I totally agree guys. I would be hard pressed to count all the little 2,3,4,5, and 6 point young bucks I used to fill my tags with the first several years I bowhunted.
WHY? Because the question always seemed to be…Did you get your BUCK?
Most immature bucks in areas in the UP of Michigan are WAY over harvested, and does WAY under harvested. The past 10 years I have gone 8 points or better Bow & Gun.
This is my personal choice since I do not hunt in a QDM area.
I have only shot two bucks in 10 years but have harvested several does and(in December) fawns. I have thoroughly enjoyed each season and our family eaten some mighty fine venison.
I have NO PROBLEM with guys legally taking young bucks BUT…..1, They will never be BIG BUCKS if you shoot em…2, The doe/buck ratio ideally is 3 or 4 to 1. I’ll guarantee its much higher in your area.
    Good H unting! Tom

I agree with all the guys. Two quick points.

    1. Easy drag
    2. Best eating

PS. Small deer harder shot to make.

    Good job buddy

Congrats on the deer AmWatson that was your second one this year right? Way to go

Don’t worry about what some drunk has to say, he has probably never taken a deer with a bow, I would much rather see someone take a doe fawn and let the young bucks walk

I would rather take a doe fawn than a mature doe eating wise, that’s for sure. I don’t like taking a fawn if I’s not pretty sure it isn’t a buck fawn, but I got no problem with shooting a young doe.

Personally, I’m not that big on venison steaks, except from a fawn. Goooodd eating there.

I’m headed out with the rifle this weekend to “earn my buck”, and brown is down baby, regardless of size. DNR says I got to shoot one, so I will.

Nice Job AMWatson! The choice is yours. There is nothing wrong with managing your land. If there are two many then there are two many. Nice Job on your 2nd deer. The only comment I would make for me personally, as some one said previous. I would make sure it was a doe and not a button buck! Great Job and good luck with the rut coming upon us before we know it!

Nothing wrong at all, shooting a fawn to fill a tag. Can’t get any better meat.

Where is the problem………The problem lies in the drunk, with his boy………Nice impression!!!

Hey, I have had my fair share of brew, but maybe that drunk should step back and look at the example he is teaching his kid………drinking/driving……..with a kid in the vehicle…….Sounds like the guy has some issues he needs to take care of…..

Congrats on the deer and good for you for having the feelings you do when harvesting animals. If you didn’t feel that way, I would recommend seeing a shrink!!!

I too shot a young buck (8″ spikes) on Friday night. I shot it strictly for the meat. It actually had a nice body size too. I went out to bowhunt after duck hunting so much this season. Again,… I just wanted the tag filled and the meat – so I could get back to roosters and duck hunting. I party hunted with my brother both Friday and Saturday nights. After Friday though, I laughed and told him I would only shoot a 10 point or larger buck for his tag. ……Low and behold!! At 5:15 PM I shot a nice 10 pointer – and I’m even getting it mounted. It’s the largest buck I’ve shot in the 25 years I’ve bowhunted. It’s also the first buck I’ve actually grunted and rattled into range (from 100 yards out). I guess sometimes things just work out. Either way, most deer shot bowhunting are trophies to me too. I lost count on deer that I’ve shot with a gun (some very large one’s too), but I never seem to forget the archery harvests.
Congrats AMWatson!! …..You got a trophy too.

Sorry,… No pics yet. I still live in the 35mm world anyhow. I have to hunt some birds this weekend and use up my film for developing. I’ll see what I can do after that.
