I have been out the last few days and have been seeing alot of deer. After watching them all I would say the young bucks are doing some curious chasing/following of does. They get shoed off right away though. Last night I had three little bucks and one real nice one come out single file into a field. So seeing them hanging together still makes me think the real good action won’t get going for another week or two at best.

I was out on saturday evening. And also did some scouting on sunday. Saturday, I had a doe run by me about 3/4 throttle, not a minute later a little six pointer came trotting by. I tried to stop the doe with a bleet, but she kept going. The buck I stopped with a grunt, but needs a few more years before I’d draw on him, but just that sight leads me to believe the rut is starting. She must have been close….At any rate, saw a bunch of active scrapes and rubs on sunday scouting. I have next week off, so I can’t wait….should be prime rut by then I am thinking!!!

A week ago tonight I saw a 2-1/2 year-old (or so) buck with his head down chasing a couple does in Dubuque. I was dropping my 12 year-old off at her mother’s house and the deer crossed the road right in front of us. The does did not want anything to do with the young buck. I work with several people that bow hunt and they have told me the bucks are rubbing and the young ones are chasing the does. I will be sitting in my stands this coming weekend.
I believe that from now until the end of the first week in November is the best time to find that trophy. After that the big bucks will be on does and are much harder to find than they are now. A year ago this coming weekend I saw 9 bucks in a day and a half of hunting that were all within bow range. Only one was a shooter and my arrow glanced off of a twig. He was well over 180 B&C and the nicest deer I saw all of last year. If you have does go past your stand this time of the year you will see bucks. Just be patient and let the smaller bucks go. They tend to travel in groups this time of the year and they start showing their stuff so rattling works really well. I cut several “clear” shooting lanes a couple weeks ago so that no twigs get in the way this year.

Two weeks ago I had three bucks from 6-8 points fighting it out while a doe ate leaves off my tree. Quite a sound to hear at 1 AM. The doe eventually walked off and all three bucks followed and continued their sparring.

I was out small game hunting on Sunday and saw twice as many scrapes as the previous week. It looks like they are just starting the scraping as I haven’t seen any bigger than 2 ft in diameter and extremely fresh. Last year at the end of the rut I was seeing 5-6 ft or bigger scrapes.

It’s time to get the bow out!

I agree, carpking. The hair on my neck is just starting to stand up a little so it must be close. While pheasant hunting last weekend I noticed some small scrpaes and a few rubs on small trees so I don’t think the big boys are out carousing heavy quite yet. Should be soon though.

I went out Sunday and checked out the area that I shot gun hunt and did find quite a bit of rubs and scapes, things are starting to heat up!
Went out tonight and sat in one of my bow stands and stuck a big old doe, she went about 40 yards and droped like a rock! One down and 4 to go

    Nice work, Steve.

Now leave a couple of does for the bucks to chase!

Starting next Friday I have 10 straight days of nothing but hunting! I look forward to this week every year. TIME! ….. With a full next Thursday things are only gonna get better. I’ll have my cup of every morning a go!

No pics this time, there was no one with me and I am not that crazy about pics after they are dressed out and out of the woods, but that’s just me.
