Just got back from a few days of Bow hunting South of Fargo! It was nice to be back out especially up there. The cold weather was nice also. I seen a ton of deer and can’t wait to get back up there. One down thing from the trip is people are trepsassing on a couple of farms I hunt and also have people hunting out of our stands . This really pisses me off . there is a group of guys that hunt some adjacent land to ours and the respect nothing! There are 5 guys that hunt 17 acres, well I guess if you count the treestands they hunt of ours they hunt about a 100 acres. Not only do they hunt our stands they do it with the wrong wind and really screw things up , but that is not the point! I hunted one night across the river on a different farm but could hear across the river a bunch of deer blowing the whole night. They were pretty close too. With that wind some one must be in a few stands across the river. When it got dark I got out of my stand with my girlfriend (we seen 22 deer that evening with 3 bucks) cause we hunted the right stand with the right wind! Any ways Paul who was hnting a stand across the river for the NW wind owns that land got down out of his stand to check out the stands and see if he could figure out what was going on with all the commotion over there?? When we get out of those stands we always turn the tree steps a 1/4 turn. He found the 3 stands closest to the property line on that side were being used by someone . If you cant tell I’m pissed We stopped in to the neighbors the following morning, but there were not there and one guy was still in his stand. Paul was heading back Sunday night to talk to the land owner. For those of you wondering this is not the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th time we have reminded them where the property line is. Next time I might be flinging arrows at some body! Sorry but I needed to vent !
Sunday morning I had an encounter with a 140 class Whitetail that could not been any closer. As I settled in 25 minutes before shooting light, the morning was cold and I had a perfect wind for this set up (NE). About 10 mintues after I got settled in I heard leaves ruslting around to my right what seemed within a 100 yards. It stopped and then I heard foot steps in the leaves to my right coming closer. I thought to myself it had to be a buck, chances are it’s to early for a doe to be out of the corn this early??? The steps kept getting louder. I picked up the deer as it came across the power line clear cut. I could see horns and the they looked big. He stopped about 25 yards out. He started up again and was heading right at me. He came in brushing the tree I was in and passed directly below my stand as I watched in awe of that great buck as my heart was racing just hoping he would stop and stay awhile. I mean I watched this buck pass below my feet through the aluminum grate on my platform of my stand. In this particular tree I’m only about 14′ high. I could have spit on this mature deer, he was so close. He was a 5×5 with good beams and defintely outside the ears. He stopped 10 yards past my tree and stood broadside for about 10 seconds browsing on the ground. I thought about grunting to make him stop and stay perhps, but did not want to educate that mature deer to my where abouts. So I watched him walk away into the darkness. As soon as he was gone I wanted to make sure, since I did not have a watch that I could not see through my peep. I came to full draw and found out what I knew. I could not see through my peep . My top pin I have for 20 yards and in is awesome. It glows all the time. The trouble I have is seeing through my peep in low light. But that is ok too, cause if I can’t see through my peep it means its to early or late to shoot!
Anyone else with a good encounter this last week?
