Ok I’m back. I have been missing in action but wanted to share an awesome time had afield the other weekend. It was that time a year again and the end of September can only mean one thing. Bow hunting in ND with the “Twist of Fate” organization. If no one has heard of it, it is a org. that puts together an awesome hunt for those a little less fortunate. These physically challenged people are truly amazing and let no handicap stand in there way of enjoying the outdoor experience. This year my friend Paul and I helped Roger guide a truly inspiring team of [censored] Fischer a 69 year old self Proclaimed “Blind Bow Hunter” (Legally Blind for 33 years) and his sighter Darryl Nelson, both from Wisconsin. [censored] has been coming to the Twist of Fate hunt for 5 years and has yet to harvest a deer. Although he said early in the hunt that he would like to bag a deer, he really enjoyed his time spent in camp with the other hunters and guides. All the Hunters that week beared unbelievable mosquitos and warm temperatures. [censored] and Darryl have harvested numerous deer with different firearms, but yet have gotten a deer with a bow. Saturday morning was a tad cooler than the few before and after some scouting and learning the day before, Darryl and [censored] had settled into their ground blind Saturday morning in hopes of getting a shot at a deer. Darryl recalls being on deer the previous hunts during the prior days but just have yet to put it together and get a shot. They were hunting a farm called the Pines, that I spent quite a few days at last year during the Pre Rut. This was the same farm Paul took a respectable 8 pointer on the last day of bow season on a drive only to watch a 150 class 8 pointer come within 7 yards moments later . As the sun came up Saturday morning [censored] & Darryl had 2 does and a fawn come through their shooting lane, but trying to get into position spook them off, but then 5 minutes later they found a buck coming into that same lane. [censored] drew the bow and Darryl got him into postion and sighted the deer in for the 12 yard shot. Darryl gave the command and [censored] let her fly. The buck took off and went about 80 yards where it expired. It was a 5 point buck. This is one day afield that I will not forget and I never took a shot, sat in a stand, called one in. Just being there and sharing an awesome experience with some old friends and 2 new ones made my day. Being able to share this experience and watch someone harvest their first deer and buck at that with a bow. We all have been there and know how difficult it can be to make it all come together especailly in a limited time of 4 days. Yet to have lost your sight and do it, what an accomplisment Way to go [censored] and Darryl!

The “Twist of Fate” this year had around 20 hunters and I believe that almost 1/2 of them ended up harvesting a deer. Good times were had by all and laughs were shared by all at camp and I’m looking forward to next year. If anyone is interested in information about the Twist of Fate ND Chapter feel free to PM me. They are always looking for Sponsors or Donations. Believe me, I have heard it straight from the Hunters themselves this is a first rate program and they love coming back year after year. The sad part is since [censored] harvested a deer this year, he will have to wait a year before possibly returning. Until next time, everyone good luck and be safe.

Thanks Guys! It is a great program. I have only been involved/helping out for the last 3 years or so. I have had numerous hunters say it is the best event they go to for hunting. Hunters come from around the US to this event. The hunters disabillities range from anything from sight, paralyzation, to servial pulsy (spell?), and so on. These disadvantaged men and women let nothing stand in their way of enjoying the outdoors. The people involved in this are amazing. From the volunteers, to the guides, the sponsors, donaters, the hunters themselves to, the landowners allowing complete strangers hunt on their land. All of these people are needed to make this event such a success. It is always a great time to share time in camp with such great people sharing stories from life to time spent afield, making new friends and spending time with old ones.

The Hunters name from above gets censored but if you think of a name for Richard you will know why. Last Spring he and Darryl bagged a 25 lb Turkey with a bow.

What happened to Fall? Where is the cool weather ?

I saw a story today on channel 4 WCCO on a hunt for disabled Vets at camp Ripley put on by the VFW. They will probably run the story again at 10pm if anyone wants to catch it. Very cool, I hope MN offers more hunts like this, it would be fun to be involved in something like that and being a little closer to home is nice too.
