What kind of rack do you prefer, tall or wide?

And before anyone says it, we are not talking women!

Just looking at the trail cam pics got me thinking. Now, I know the best is tall AND wide, but if given the coice between say a 10 pointer with a wide rack but shorter tines, or a narrower rack with really tall tines, which do you prefer the looks of? Personally, I like the taller racks better, but I suspect alot of guys would go for the bigger spread.

I like the racks that when you see them walking down a corn row each side of the rack is hitting a row. This happened two years ago while bow hunting early near a standing corn field. As the deer came toward me I saw both rows on each side moving as he got closer. That tends to get the heart pounding. Any decent buck with a bow is good. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Your right both would be nice. I would take a 15″ spread with 8-10-12″ tines anyday of the week. Not, saying a 22″ spread with 4-5″ tines isn’t going to look good, but the shorter spread deer is going to score a lot better and when your trying to hit the books every inch counts.

I am fortunate enough to have both a wide rack and a tall rack hanging on my wall and I like them both. I guess the thing that determines a good set of antlers for me is how heavy they are. The tall rack I have has 12″ G2’s and has heavy main beams all the way out. It is not a real wide rack but still has long main beams. The whole rack is tall and heavy. The wide set of antlers is also a heavy set with fairly long main beams but the longest tines are only about 7″. The tall rack is a Pope & Young class 8 pointer taken with an arrow. The wide rack is a 10 pointer that is in the same class but was shot with a gun. I would be happy to match either deer’s antlers this year. Our bow season doesn’t open for another 8 days. Talk about getting anxious. I never get much actual hunting done until after the middle of October anyway but it is always fun to get out to put up some new stands and do a little scouting.

I want a rack that looks like the “Zaft buck”. I think it is the most awsome from a front view.
