Opening Evening

Did anybody have any luck this weekend?

I was experiencing a gusty Easterly wind switching quite often. So instead of screwing up one of my stands (do not have any easterly wind stands for Bow Hunting on the property up North), I decided to set up a Ground Blind and sit in it with my girlfriend on her first hunt ever. This was a good piece of public land with an Alphaha field, adjacent to Private land. I knew I would see something and seen a nice buck last December there. The evening was on the warm side, but started to cool down somewhat as the wind laid down. The sun was begining to set and was off the field completely, when I heard something coming from behind us. I heard it again just to our left. There he was on the edge, checking the field before entering. I could not see his entire rack due to the foilage, but knew he was decent and only about 20 yards away. She was turned and ready for when he stepped out. The wind was good and it would only be a matter of time, till he stepped out. He snapped his head our direction, spun and blew all in the same motion. He was gone and still blowing a few more for good measure. I was like what just happened ??? Did he pick out my ground blind?? It was pretty concealed in that direction???? I looked back towards her and caught a glimpse of something Big & White. I looked again and two people on Horseback had entered the field and were trotting in our direction . They came to the little point we were set up on and stopped. Started chatting, until I gave them a grunt. They looked our direction less than 20 yards away and was suprised to see a “Bear Baiting Tent” as one rider put it. The other got scared of the bears and they quickly ran off about 100 yards where the called in another rider to investigate . They hung around the remaining 1/2 hour of daylight on the other end of the field.

Just another scenario that is the reason I hate hunting public property. I know they have every right to be on the land as I do, but please use some common sense and courtesy.

My girlfriend was really bummed. I had warned her of the consequences of hunting on public land, but to come so close to have it ruined by that. She still is not over it . I told her there is always next time, but I don’t think that went over all that well.

What about anyone else??? Any Good or Bad stories?

Sounds like you ran into a little bad luck to me. Didn’t get out like I wanted to, but took the kid duck hunting instead. Heading out on Wed. to see if I can kill the thirdy pointer. Was it you that was heating things up or was the sun really doing it?????? j/k

Waterfowler, Just talked to a guy that just got back from colorado on friday from a 13 day hunt and he didn’t think the real good part of the rut has started out there yet. He heard some bugles, but not like it was prime rut. They were into the animals also. They ended up with 2 bulls and 1 cow, this is all with a bow too. FYI Good Luck

I was on my way to Austin this morning on I90 and saw a nice elk rack on the top of an SUV, made me think of your upcoming hunt John, hopefully your timing for the rut will be good.

I just talked with a friend who missed a nice 5×5 on the opening morning of muzzle loader in Co. He called him in, missed, reloaded and called him in again. This time he forgot his primer. It was the only shot the group had unfortunately.

I made it out Saturday morning and Sunday evening. I hardly slept Friday night anticipating the opener . As the sun started rising I thought I saw something moving right out in front of my stand. As I sat there focusing and trying to see what or if there was actually something there, a nice fat brown weasel came sneaking through the woods. He started heading up the hill toward a tree when a squirrel came down the same tree. I am not sure who ran faster when they came face to face. I didn’t see any deer on that stand, but it was still a great day. I sat on stand until 10:30 listening to the stream right behind me and watching the woods take on the sunrise. Saturday night I had to go out with the wife and some friends si I didn’t get to hunt. A freind of mine who is my hunting partner ended up making a 20 yard shot on a tender fawn. On Sunday afternoon we both headed out to our stands again. He hunted the river bottom and I hunted an oak flat next to a cornfield. About 4:30 a couple of fawns came out and browsed around within 20 yards of my stand for awhile. I really wanted to take a shot, but they were sure small. I was really hoping maybe the doe would be behind them, but she never did materialize. The wind was pretty strong and then got real variable. In my mind I knew I was against the odds from this particular stand, but I sat it out anyway. On the way to the stand, the corn was just destroyed. There were stalks laying down everywhere and most of the ears were cleaned up pretty good. I wondered what was doing so much damage to the fields there. As the evening sun started casting shadows, I watched a couple fawns making their way to the trail that lays in front of my stand. All of a sudden both of their heads shot up looking right down the trail and then they shuffled out into the corn. I looked around and found the source that sppoked the fawns, coons, and a bunch of them. I watched them head into the cornfield and the disappear. Well, a little while later I could hear the snapping of cornstalks. I was thinking, here come the deer. NOT. These little terrors (coon), were tearing the corn field up! I finally got to see them in action. They would stand up on their back legs and push the stalks over. They must have broke 40 stalks the short time they were there. No more deer showed up on that stand the rest of the night. I made my way down to the truck to see how my buddy did. When I got there he wasn’t there. Finally after about 45 minutes, I was beginning to get a little worried and decided I better go and try to find him. Just then, I could see his Cat’s Eye light making its way to the truck. When he got close he started calling for help. I was thinking he fell out of his stand, since he refuses to wear a safety strap . Turns out, he shot a 115# doe dressed out, and he has been dragging her through the river bottoms. By the time he got that far, he was whipped . Nice guy that I am, I dragged her the 100 yards to the truck. He saw 3 deer that night. A doe, fawn, and what he calls a monster buck. He said he saw the buck for maybe a minute 80 yards from his stand. The buck just vanished as he was headed up the hill to the oaks. I feel pretty good because I picked out both of his tree stand spots and he connected from both of them. He felt pretty bad because I didn’t get one. Like I told him, there is more to it than killing. I could have shot fawns Sunday, but I CHOSE not too. There is still plenty of season left to get deer. I told him to just clear out the does and fawns now, so they will not be in the way when the big boy shows up Man I love bowhunting

Lip Ripper….I figured it was the sun, but you never know until you ask.

Hope I get to see the boy I have pics of, but then again I better not get my hopes up.

    Good luck to all.
