Nice Buck, John! Same gang muzzleloader hunting this year as the past years?? Your Dad, Gordy, John Biederman, etc….
Did he get it near the farm?? They hunt everyday of muzzleloader season and hit it hard. Hopefully the snow hangs in for a few more days…

Hey Watson – We do practice QDM management and have been doing so for many years, we let the first time hunters shoot a little one if they want. I have only shot 2 bucks in the last 12 years. That is the downside to QDM, but the upside is seeing bucks like this. This year we did see two different bucks that were very large, and we passed up a few “that will be really nice next year”

To tie into Zimmy’s question, this was shot over towards nugget lake, So further away then we usually hunt, but QDM does work as we typically see if not harvest one for the wall each year. The group was a little smaller yesterday, it was just my dad and my uncle pushing some woods to each other. I am sure they are back at it this morning. They are die hards

    John:

What criteria do you guys use to determine a “shooter”?

Also, do you havrest alot of does? Or is it more trophy deer management?

How many acres do you guys have?

Sorry, I probably shouldn’t have posted this in the ppics post. Respond via pm if you can John, thanks.

I took the buck on Nov.13th. I had about 15-20 does and fawns come through already. (This was an afternnon hunt) I was starting to believe that none of the bucks were going to come through. At around 5:00 I saw a doe coming by and following her was this buck. He was grunting loudly. I could her him before I could see him. I made about a 5 yard shot out of a tree stand. He went about 60 yards and layed down. The rest is history. His green score is 128.

Yep same buck. Shot opening morning in WI in the rain. The second pic is the following Sat when we were packing up to head home with about 6″ on the ground and snow for 260 miles of driving.
No great story really. Sitting in an old ground blind made of pine stumps and brush. Had some Tinks 69 hanging on cotton balls. A few grunts and doe bleats at first light and saw this rack coming thru the foggy mist at about 100yds. Gave one little bleat and he turned to come my way. Raised the rifle and could only see fog in the scope. Back down and wiping with my hankerchief. Up again and he was at about 25 yds straight on. One shot from the old blond 30.06 and it was done. We did catch the tail end of the rut which is unusual in northern WI. After dragging this one about 200yds to the top of a ravine I went back to sit in the blind. Had another small 6pt coming in but would not get closer than 50yds. While watching him make a scrape a spike came from behind me and walked with 10 ft of the blind. Looked at me and the gut pile and the 6pt and decided he needed to be somewhere else!! About 5 minutes later while still watching the 6pt I heard brush crack to my left and turned to see a small 8pt basket rack with his nose in one of the cotton balls at about 30 yds. By then I was wet and cold and was time to go see who else had been shooting and get some help to drag. Mine was a nice 10pt that dressed at 180#.

I just thought I would show you the deer a friend of mine harvested off their land this last year. They are in Buffalo County south of Durand. ENJOY!

He is not the biggest buck in the woods but he hung around all morning. So when he came back the 3rd time I decided he was big enough.Besides I have all my buddies tags to fill .
