How does all that work? Do all the winners meet on the first morning and walk out into the darkness or do you get to do some scouting. Can you put out stands early? Is it first guy to the spot wins type of thing? Can you leave your stand up to “save” a spot? Wazzup?

It’s a Federal military installation. Your only let in for the day starting at 5:45 AM. Your permit is checked at the gate to get in the camp, (Drivers license, picture I.D.needed) and then need to register at the DNR check point when let in to hunt that day. There is camping just outside the camp where I guess you would call it the barracks area. You need to be out of the camp at 7:30 PM. They patrol it continuously. If you don’t abide by the rules you go directly to jail. It’s a FEDERAL MILITARY INSTALLATION! The state has no jurisdiction there. It’s a privledge to be allowed to hunt there that the DNR has gotten for us.
They have zones and Dud areas marked off limits on maps you are supplied with. It’s first come, first serve on the best spots. They only allow 2250 people per hunt, so do the math you have roughly 75 square miles in Camp Ripley. I’ve been doing these hunts since the mid 80s and you just learn by exploring or gathering info from people that have been there before, which is how I started. You have to bring everything out daily, you take in. The reason being they can cancel the hunt at any time, so you may not get back in the second day. Most people don’t venture to far off the beaten trail. You have as good a chance bagging a deer just sitting off the road on any deer trail. There are deer everywhere in there. Talk to any reserve (if there are any left not deployed)who’s been in there, they can help alot. They are also a great place to potentially pick up a good map of the area too!
It’s truely a chance to see and possibly shoot a trophy animal. I’ve seen at least 1-8 pointer or better everytime I’ve been there. Yet to bag one though.
A hunt I always look forward to, it will be my 11th time drawn to hunt up there.
It’s become less popular in the last few years with non resident license price hikes, I’ve seen plates on cars from as far away as Virginia and New Mexico!

So if you shoot a buck there does it count against your 2004 MN state quota?

This is the first year you can use a bonus archery tag. At least thats what I’ve been told.
Or else your right, you would be filling your buck tag for the season. We have intensive harvest tags up here.

I have witnessed some dandy deer up there. Unfortunately, they didn’t let me carry bullets in my M16 at the time…..
