OK I can’t deny the itch any longer I’m jacked and need a fix! I thought I would try to post the Deer I arrowed last year during the 2nd rut in MN. I kicked him up on a deer drive with my Dad during the gun season, but never got a shot at him in the thick slough . He came out scent checking a group of does and fawns right in front of me on December 3. 15 yard broadside shot. I had pulled back on him early to begin with, and then the does were in the way, I had to wait to shoot and felt my breathe start to quicken and I swear he could hear my heart pounding, but I calmed myslef down just in time as 2 does parted annd his vitals were exposed. I let it fly, he Jumped and went about 10 yards and just looked around as if nothing happened. I swore I hit him good???? He started to walk off as I quickly reached for another arrow. Then I looked down on the ground from where he just was an saw the blood . He went another 40 yards and laid down and was out! He offically goes 168 6/8″. Just over an inch short of a Booner. He Gross’s 176 4/8″ with Main beams over 25.5″. Am I pumped for this year????? YOU BET!

He’s in Fargo , ND getting done right now. I hope to have him back in a month or so. I do a ton of hunting South of Fargo and I have only pulled a trophy from there so far. So between not knowing any taxidermists down here and having my best buddy who knows a lot of them up there, I brought him up there to get done! Thanks again for the pic tips Steve. See the Orr report under MN Lakes Gen. Discussion for the smallie pics are up too! Thanks again Steve!

    OK your right

Lets say I gathered myself enough to make a great (perhaps lucky) shot! Believe me the Fever was quickly setting in when I was at full draw, he was 15 yards away broadside and I couldn’t shoot cause the does were in the way! I caught myself telling the does what seems like out loud to get The BLEEP out of the way! That’s when I noticed by breathe racing and knew I had to gather myself so I could make the shot. I got it back together enough, my breath slowed back down and just in time the does moved apart and I locked in and let her fly!

Lets just say I went out celebrating that night

Here is my best buck so far. It was harvested with a shotgun in 2002 at 25 yards on the ground.

Lip Ripper-Mine is a little fella compared to that bruiser of yours . I keep looking back at yours and man does he have the total package-length, width, and circumference . I am still waiting for a buck with a bow, this could be the year ( I hope). Like my buddies told me when I got that buck ” The sun shines on a dog’s #$% once in awhile” . If I never get another big one, I will still be grateful for the one I did get.

Thanks Gary and Scott! Yes Gary I love fishing, but my true passion is bow hunting for Bruiser Whitetails with out a doubt. I have a friend of Mine South of Fargo, that we have been trophy Hunting Whitetails for about 5 years now. I have passed up a few dandy bucks chasing stuff like I shot above. There are a few days I come out of the stand kicking myself for not harvesting a nice 120″ to 135″ buck. Yet, I have as much fun chasing as I do harvesting. Just having an encounter with a mature P&Y buck is an absolute thrill, much less fooling him enough where he walks in bow range. I string out almost every season down to the wire and end up taking a doe on the last evening or day, just hoping for a shot at something like above. I believe in taking does for both putting meat in the freezer but also to manage the land I hunt on. I have had a few encounters with trophy bucks bigger and smaller than the one above, but have never been able to get a clear ethical shot. Or even a few times I have had P&Y Bucks in close enough, but I’m looking across the field at soemthing bigger and better, making me pass up a 130 class buck. I look at hunting bucks and fishing very similar. You can ‘t get the big ones if you don’t let the small ones grow!

AMWatson, that is a dandy buck you got, no matter how you took him.

As far as I’m really concerned, ANY deer taken with a bow is a trophy. Just to fool the most sought after big game animal in North America enough to get him/her within 30 yards and have everthing go just right to harvest a deer with a bow is an awesome feeling and accomplishment. This is my first entry for P&Y , but I have had two that just missed. One was a 5×5 just short @ 120 5/8″. The other would have made it but, I shot it right at the begininig of the rut and did not notice his broken G3 tine the morning I shot him costing me about 10″ total. He still goes 123 3/8″. Yes both of these are on my wall, they were and always will be trophies in my eyes.

Now I’m really jacked up! I can’t wait to get out in the field!

AM Watson, You can tell your buddies that sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good! You need a little luck always to harvest a mature whitetail. Sometimes it seems that if I didn’t have bad luck I would have no luck at all!
