CWD……What’s your opinion?

CWD is down around my hunting area and seems to be a hot topic and at the same time….old news. Now the rumors are that the WI DNR is going to hike up the bounties on the deer to $800 – $1000 for a deer that tests positive. My question is why are we killing all of these deer? It has been out West in several locations for 20 years and the disease has never proven to have hurt a human. Is this Mother Nature’s way of thinning the herd because there were so many deer in a particular area? Just like any mammal, if you put too many of them in one spot, some will get sick or starve and die, yet the DNR is going to eradicate all of the deer.

It just seems like this is blown way out of proportion. Where is this bounty money from the DNR coming from? Also, I remember some statistics over the first year when CWD was found stating that $12 million was spent on CWD research, testing, and DNR costs, but around 120 deer out of a few 100,000 had CWD. The bottom line is that each deer found had $100,000 spent on it.

    What is your opinion?

in my opinion…………… its is blow WAY outa proportion like what you said.

There is NO possible way to ERRADICATE all the deer in the “Erradication Zone” Especially if they have ordinary hutners doin it. THe only way they can really kill all the deer is to have helicopter and sharp shooters do it!! But deer are mobile……… they can move several miles… anyways.

Plus, i think i read somewhere that CWD may also be spread thruough soil….. and even if all the infected deer were gone, the stuff slill lurks and will pop up again.

Its natures way of thining out……… its a NATURAL PROCESS!

One thing we need to remember. CWD is spread through contact. Comparing out west deer to the deer here is like apples to oranges. The deer populations are nowhere near out west as they are here. The threat of CWD here has a much bigger impact. I am still on the fence as to whether the DNR is out of line or not. I personaly think they should kep testing to see the progress. But the DNR is in a position of damned if you do, damned if you don’t. If they were to stop the eradication process and it spreads like a wildfire, people will blame them. If they continue on with the eradication, people will still scream. Without the help of the people, they will definitely not get anything done.

another thing to remeber, is the DNR also has to realize what is happing to the hunting in WI. Deer hunting is one of the largest traditions in WI basically. And killing so many deer is going to make hunting poorer in the next several years to come. Granted, the real threat and erradication really only happen in one basic region, it will still hurt the future of hunting…IMO.

I got several buddies that live in the erradication zone and have been shooting/seeing big bucks every year. It comes with the area i guess. My roomate shot nearly 15 deer himself last year…. legally. And this year it was onyl a hand full……….. plus he was seeing much LESS deer, but they were NOT gone.

I am not sure teh impact it will have on hunting, but IMO…killing so many deer will make hunting poor and people will start blaming the DNR cuz they had to “erradicate” all the deer. ……then they are in another predicament. (sp?)
