Last weekend I had the opportunity to fish with my daughter…Sharon here on IDO….and her husband Billy. We stayed at the family deer shack and hauled my Lund around to a couple of small lakes nearby. The weather was unsettled as it seems like it has been all Spring and that certainly had an effect on fish location. The water temperatures were 50-52 degrees everywhere we looked, and as far as I could tell there wasn’t much happening along the shorelines yet.
We did find an abundance of Bluegills and Crappies scattered across a large flat in 6 to 8 feet of water. There was scattered new growth cabbage weeds. The first day we had light breezes from the north and light cloud cover and we caught mainly Bluegills and only a couple of Crappies. They were spread out all over the place. Putting the anchor down killed the action so we stayed on the bow-mount and went around in circles most of the day. The next day the wind had switched around and was blowing briskly into this flat, and the Crappies went crazy.
Presentation was pretty simple, Sharon and Billy were using ultralight spinning rods with a jig under a bobber. I was fly fishing, using my 6 weight, small nymphs, and an indicator (for an explanation of the method, see my article in the May IDO Magazine).
Great fishing, comfortable surroundings, and time on the water with the kids. It doesn’t get any better than that!
