Deep water jig bite

Went out the other day after being the guide fore my son’s bass tournament on the Whitefish Chain. I was ready to fish for myself. Went to a Longville lake. I’ve had luck with nice-sized Spring smallies. They have been a puzzle for me in the Summer. Found a sunken 10 ft weedy island with steep breaks. I rarely use a 3/4 oz jig with a chigger craw trailer, but I thought that’s what’s the big boys use. So, why not. I had the best 2 hours of fishing in a long time. LMB and SMB running together. Most of them were 16-19 in. That jig bite is fun. My old Curado drag was slipping often. Time for carbonex upgrades. Just nice to catch a few in the dog days. I’ll probably lay an egg next time, but felt good today. Good luck everyone.

Sounds like a great time. There’s something really fun about a deeper water jig bite.

I’ve had pretty good luck on the same spot. Found some rocks and donated a few jigs to the cause. I’ve also realized our FleetFarm and Gander stores have lots of 1/4 oz jigs left and not many heavy ones. I’ve also come to understand the benefits of a stiff rod for this style of fishing. A medium action is a bit light for hook ups. I would normally use a drop shot in this situation, but the jig has been superior. It’s amazing what you can learn every time out. Seem to run bigger on the jig. Thanks for any additional tips. I’m all ears.
