Having a hard time deciding on a sonar gps unit. I thought i had my mind made up three times. Main thing i am looking for is side imaging and custom map creation. Thought i was going to go with thr garmin echo map plus 73 sv. Now i see the 93sv and the lowrance elite9 ti are only 100 dollars more. Who has better side imaging? I am familiar with lowrance units but would have no problem switching.

My opinion is based off using lowrance graphs (both elite & hds). I have only ice fishing experience with a Garmin 73sv+ and side scan was not something we used.

First off your going to be much better off with a larger screen so i would narrow it down to your 9″ screen options.

Elite 9Ti (assuming this IS NOT a Ti2 unit?)
Garmin 93sv (assuming this IS the plus unit?)

Both are touch screen & Side imaging will be fairly comparable between these two units. If you are looking at an Elite Ti2 with active image transducer the side image will be better on the lowrance. To have custom mapping on the Elite Ti i belive you will have to use navionics sonar chart live which requires a yearly subscription. I have not used Garmins custom map creation so i can not comment & im sure someone else will have more info. Over all I personally would choose Garmin just because you will have the option to add panoptix at some point if you so choose. Keep in mind both panoptix & livescope tansducers are still very expensive at this point.

If memory serves me correct, the TI units are not networkable…… if you dont plan on adding another unit, no big deal. Both units are very solid graphs.

You may want to investigate the navionics mapping options for both as a potential tie breaker.

If you are ever thinking of fishing Panoptix, go with Garmin. Great deals on the 93plus right now. Might be worth waiting to see what Lowrance version of Panoptix will look like too this spring, but it will only work with some units and I dont believe the Elite is on of them.

Did I read on another thread that Garmin does not repair their units other than if warranty covers it?

That’s the way “they all” do it these days.

Generally you pay a flat rate for an out-of-warranty unit. Doesn’t matter if the computer is fried or the screen is scratched, you pay x-amount.

I don’t know the price point of the units you mentioned but today I ordered a Humminbird Helix 9 Mega SI G2N Chartplotter for $950. Cabela’s has them for $999, I got mine from Gander Outdoors/Overton’s/Camping World. This will network with a Minnkota Terrova Mega DI which is on my short list. The Minnkota was actually my priority purchase and is what prompted the purchase of the HB. With the G3 replacing the G2 it was a great opportunity to save $550.
