Deals on 5 lb Propane Tanks

I think the 5 lb tanks are the perfect size for those who transport their gear. More portable than the 20 lb tanks, and way more capacity than the 1 lb tanks.

For anybody looking, they will fit in the Menard’s 15% off bag, that deal is going through the 14th, and that discount gets them to under $50. But you will need to get a hose to use with most heaters and grills.

REI currently has the Ignik 5 lb tank WITH the hose on closeout for $76. For those who are not members at REI, they currently have a $30 gift card promotion that essentially gets you the lifetime membership for free.

These 5 lb tanks cost less to fill than the current cost of one 1 lb tank, and give you more than 5 times as much fuel. They are refillable, and legal to transport in your vehicle. Also there is no issue with storing/transporting/disposing of the one pound tanks.

    Thanks for the info.

Still on the fence going away from my 20 tho? 10 years ago before building my smitty, absolutely but my 20 fits perfectly in my crate, I refill it for under $15 a couple times per season and never worry about running out.

Those refillable flame kings are a big hit but do I really want to go through the hassle of filling and swapping those?

    Hmmmmmmmm??

I had a 5lb for 20 years with the old valve so I couldn’t get it filled. Tried replacing the valve and ruined it by using the valve body to tighten it. The old tank had little or non open space to tighten the new valve. I believe they had a special tool to install it when it was built.

Said F it and bought a new 5lb tank last year I think for about $60. It’s awesome for a day or two but if you need more gas than about 2 days worth, a 10 or 11lb is the way to go. Same diameter as a 20 but shorter.

I agree on the size is good. But I’ve had more issues with propane freezing, and general flow issues. Sometimes getting towards the bottom 1/3 of the tank would not run right. Add the fact it’s more expensive to fill (per pound) than 20 lb tanks more places and also you are stopping to fill much more often I went back to the 20 lb tanks.

5lbr gets about 15 hours on a regular buddy heater run on a mix of hi/lo. This has worked fine for me. My outings are generally about 2-3 hours. Only problem I’ve had is not having a 2nd one full when I run out.

Have you looked at Flame King heaters? I saw them on Amazon.

I bought my 5 LB flame king tank from Amazon back in 2020 for $39. It looks like the same one is currently going for $80 – quite the price jump! I think that is more than I paid for my 11 LBer I got from Menards. I really like having both of those sized tanks. They both have their time and place and certain trips/scenarios where I am very glad I have that size tank.

My biggest reason for sticking with 20 lb is for the convenient of propane exchanges. I haven’t found a good place that will quickly refill. I always end up standing around waiting.

Even when walking with the smitty, I have plenty of room for the 20lb, and it’s nice to have the peace of mind of having so much fuel. But yeah, if I could find a place that would quickly fill my tanks, I see the value of going with smaller tanks.

I just purchased 4 of the 1 pound Flame Kings @19.00 each. I refill those from my 20 lb tanks.
