Hey all, long time reader, first time post. What is the deal with bananas and boating? I heard something about bad luck? What is the history behind this.

The info below was taken from Snopes.com – http://www.snopes.com/luck/superstition/bananas.asp

    ——————-

No clear reason exists as to how this superstition came to be. Common explanations include:

When top-heavy ships of earlier eras would sink, precious little other than the bananas they’d carried would be found floating on the surface, thereby leaving some to conclude conveyance of the fruit itself had led to these naval mishaps.

Spiders, snakes, and other poisonous vermin living among bananas carried in the hold would, on long haul trips, expand their horizons by infesting other parts of the ship.

Because the speediest sailing ships were used to get bananas to their destinations before they could spoil, those attempting to fish from them never caught anything while trolling.

Fisherman became ill after eating the fruit.

Other fruits would spoil more quickly when bananas were being shipped along with them, causing folks to deem bananas “bad luck.” (Actually, it wouldn’t have been ill fate that resulted in the spoilage of other foodstuffs, but instead the ethylene gas emitted by bananas as they ripen.)

Crew member injured by slipping on discarded banana peels.

Fisherman misses landing the big one due to a case of “the runs” caused by bananas he’d ingested.

Banana oil rubs off onto the hands of fisherman, thereby “spooking” the fish.

Early anglers in Hawaii would embark upon lengthy fishing trips in dugout canoes provisioned with (along with other food items) bananas. The farther they went, the fewer the fish, causing some of them to mistake correlation for causation.

Well I just thought it was because fishermen didn’t find them all that appealing! Thanks James. (Bazinga!)

(This is probably a really bad first impression)

Good one, JJ. Fishermen seem to be a lot more concerned about bananas than the fish…

Fess up BK. You’re laid out like that because of either too many Hamms or a rotten bloody mary. Or both.

What ever the deal is with them. Never bring them on a Tournament bass fishermen boat or on a fishing charter. If found, you will most likely be swimming back to shore. jester

True story except for the names have been changed to protect the innocent:

A few years back, we were catching 3 fish per night before 11pm. That’s the way it worked for 8 trips. Not always the largest fish but 3 fish none the less… Until

Mike and his girl went out with me. Nothing.
At Midnight I asked for the heck of it if they had any bananas along. She chirped YES! Would you like it? doah

I told them about bananas and fishing. They didn’t believe me. I told them to google it. We laughed.

About a half hour later I asked for the banana as I was a little hungry…Mike said he tossed it out 20 minutes ago.

In canada , you will still catch fish like those boys did, but I personally wouldn’t recommend bringing them fishing in mn!!! 😉

I also think catching a big walleye first pass first spot on the river is a bad omen!

I think it was Noah who brought the first bananas on the boat. After the animals ate a bunch it was NO more of that chit. Book of bs #8. And welcome to IDO Bob.

This is why all great river anglers fish their second spot first.

Bananas are great, but they’re not allowed in my boat.

I’m with ya fife, I don’t know what god did to bananas, or why, but he has made it clear, that they should not be in a boat. It’s for real- keep thinking of the scene in the movie Major League about Sorano not being able to hit a curveball. Funny stuff-
