Dead Stick Question

    Hey Guys,

I’ve seen some images/videos of where guys have a spoon attached or something flashy inline to their dead stick setups. Basically its line –> Flashy/Glow spoon without a hook, tied to line direct to live bait. The spoon itself is just used to attract and flash as the live bait moves about below. Anyone have experience with this?

    You mean something like this?

    Rocker Spoon

What Ive seen has been higher up on the line while the hook/bait is a foot or so below it.

Super easy to add a length of line and hook to your specs below any spoon.

Sure, just curious if anyone has tried it and had noticed any difference in catch vs just a plain hook setup.

I’ve never fished a dropper spoon with that much distance between the spoon and livebait but have had success on the dropper spoons with the shorter leads when fishing perch and crappie. I don’t just let it sit though. I’m jigging slowly until a fish starts to commit then I slow to a subtle “wiggle” to seal the deal.

This would be more for a dead stick tactic. Spoon sits up higher in the water column to make it easier for fish to see from a distance and as the bait moves around that spoon will spin and naturally move with it.

I’ve never tried it that way. I’ll be interested to see what others have to say.

    Me as well.

The one concern that I see is making sure you don’t get too high. What I mean by too high is eventually that spoon will reach the rod tip and now you have to pull the fish.

If I had to guess the ideal range to keep it high in the water column and not have to pull would be that 1-2 above the bait.

I will sometimes use a small spoon and remove the bottom hook. Attach the main line as normal to the top of the spoon and would add maybe 7-8″ of line to a small hook with a crappie minnow. Deadly setup where I fish. If you hook the minnow in the tail it will try to swim and rock that spoon which can be subtle movements and flash which brings fish in.

I would encourage people to give that a try.

I’ve used that many times on lake Eerie/ other perch fisheries for perch. It’s a killer technique in big water.

    Thanks for the input guys.

I look at spearing setups and guys using a big spoon high in the water column to draw fish in and then a live decoy to finish them off.

Same concept here, using a spoon higher in the water column to draw fish in and then live bait to finish them off. You have the added bonus of that bait, while trying to swim, moving that spoon for you, like Chris talked about.

If you use this technique you would be losing the visual “up bite” on a deadstick.

Why not old school with a spinner blade? The blade is much lighter than a spoon. Will dance more with the bait moving.
