I have specific need to extend WiFi access about 80 acres. I have the ability to install antenna at the house and line of sight about 1500-1600 feet to my tower with solar power. Then I need to pick up wireless devices and extend another approx 1500 feet. Been reading a lot of farm equipment reviews, but nothing I have confidence in. Anyone set up a farm or ranch?

Why don’t you look into Starlink?
I don’t need another internet provider. I need the wireless fidelity for local area network devices
November 29, 2024 at 9:55 am #2302051Might be cheaper to have another provider than trying to extend WiFi those distances and the devices required to do it. That was my thinking.
CaptainMuskyPosts: 23746November 29, 2024 at 10:05 am #2302053Starlink works but has limited distance. I’ve used it a few times even with it you’d have to extend signal somehow for what Randy wants.
November 29, 2024 at 10:16 am #2302054This is completely separate from needing anything internet related. Just need to extend Ethernet connections.
There equipment that extends 1/2 mile that ranchers use. Just can’t find anyone who actually uses it. Hate to spend the $$$ on an epic failure

Found this topic interesting, some quick googling brings up some complicated systems, this particular ones looks pretty plug and play.
James AlmquistPosts: 475November 29, 2024 at 11:29 am #2302067Its been years but I have installed a P2P system in a lumber mill to allow cameras to cover the entire yard and all record to one head unit. It had a small dish that needed to see the other dish and the in turn connected to a port on a router. It really was a simple install considering I had never seen one before the install. I wish I could remember the name of the company cause it was not too expensive if I recall.
November 29, 2024 at 3:18 pm #2302093What you’re looking for Randy, is a WiFi bridge, aka point to point bridge.
I think Ubiquity was the better known brand at one time? But there are a lot of them now. I was grunt labor to help a relative install a system to get Internet to my uncle’s shop. I recall 2 things, configuration can be tricky and the higher the units are positioned off the ground, the faster the transmission speed.
Getting the middle relay to run on solar will be interesting. I’d think ideally you could run the bridge unit off of DC so you don’t need an inverter.
Post results.

I resemble that remark! Had enough of this freaking wind. In the tower this morning – no wall space for a 75”
Grouse, bridge application is good, but I need to pick up sensors along the way. Prefer a mesh system. Most run now on Poe, so solar will work. Have 3 systems identified, just not confident in spending the $$$

I would be interested to know if you find out you can extend a mesh network far enough to span the kind of distances you are talking about. I thought mesh was just to “fill in” dead or low signal spots within a relatively small area.
I wonder if there is a way to connect a router to a link in the middle of a bridge chain to give wireless access just around that point in the bridge chain? But still pass the signal along to further links in the bridge chain.

On another forum I got recommended wavelink equipment and guys are driving signals 1500-2000 feet. Each access point/repeater is completely configured for its purpose in line. According to them, better directional antennas are used. They power from poe (power over Ethernet so solar and a couple batteries will easily take care of the remote end. One guy shared access to his security cameras at his ranch. I was shocked to see how well it live streamed. So if they can stream to internet, I should have no issues with water sensors. Goal is to have this set up by April.
If this works, adding internet access opens a lot of possibilities for the trespassing issues
December 2, 2024 at 9:44 am #2302494Assuming you can get line of sight you could look at Ubiquiti, they’re building bridge might work for you but they also have a few other options that might work.

LOL – Ive got two spools of 4 strand MM fiber. Just know that a plow will hit it
