I do it all the time. Get a clean cut on the blank to desired legnth. Guide spacing may need to change. Wrap and poxy.
Measure to where you want to cut and put a wrap or two of masking tape at that point being sure the cut is half way thru the tape’s width. Use a Dremel and a cut off wheel to lop it, at a fairly high rate of speed. No sweat.
Check milica unclaimed freight. They had some heavy ice fishing rods. I think they were in the $20 range. There were a few different ones, in different lengths. I think you should find one to meet your needs.
So how’s a guy turn that cut end into a handle with an actual reel seat?

Looking for rods heavier than a extra heavy laker rod. So I doubt they have anything
Tuna rods are pretty short.
There’s one that I’ve been checking out.

Thanks trumar!
I’m waiting for the next post.

Gotta find a buddy with a backhoe and auger attachment.
There are some pretty ones in there for sure.
Only one in interested in though, the “shorty”
Might be overkill though.
No need for two b frrs
What about just using your summer rods? I know they’re long but they should be able to get the job done as long as you have someone to land the fish.
I wonder what other looks like when a sturgeon comes shooting up to jump under the ice…
Maybe I should just fish for f’n walleyes.
Simply looking for advice on how to take one or two of my many 8′-9′ musky rods, cut them down (discarding butt end) and attaching a handle and reel seat to the back end.
That’s all.
I’ll figure it out…
I would sure think it would be a matter of ordering the proper size reel seats once you have the rod cut off and can measure diameter, maybe a repair but and grip and seat.
Reel seats and handles slide over the blank from the top. On an existing rod, that means removing all the guides. Unless you are a rod builder, a major PITA if it were me. But that’s how it is done.

To do that the right way you have to remove and replace all the guides also….then slide the handle and seat onto the blank. Also….you should relocate the guides to the match new length….
I don’t know how well just sticking the seat and handle on the back end will work…..
If that’s what you’re looking for your best off walking into a custom rod shop to see what the recommend. I’d be shocked if you find anyone here has turned a musky rod into and ice fishing rod.
Thorne Brothers helped me turn a summer walleye rod into a good laker rod.
I have cut rods down. I use masking tape in a series of wraps to build up diameter. I re-use old cork handles some with seats most just cork. Space your masking tape wraps even along rod blank. I then use a quality 2 part epoxy and glue blank into handle using the rings of masking tape to plunger epoxy evenly through grip and blank. I have taped Baitcasting reels onto cork in x style wrap with electrical tape.
The red tape would be masking tape. Build up for snug fit in cork handle. I cut off cork from old rods that is why diameter needs to be built up I have used beer caps with hole for blank to cover cut cork. Works for me. I usually use new blanks I pick up from St. Croix rod shop in park falls. They have a rod tippet bin you can get 3 blanks for 10-12$. Re-use old eyes from broken or retired rods. As mentioned spacing or size of eyelets may cause lengh issues when trying to cut existing rods down.
Bummer, seemed easier at first thought.
Give me a shout after Christmas like you mentioned and we will get it done !
