Cut Bait

After years of lurking was finally able to make an account (for some reason every other time I tried, never got a confirmation email). Anyway, quick question. I’ve been watching a lot of YT videos of a guy down in Nebraska who uses a lot of cut bait. He’ll catch a blue gill or crappie and slice it up for pike or cat fish. Anyone ever try to do that more north (I’m in MN)? I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone do that around here for pike.

Wow, I look pretty hard at the regs most years and didn’t realize that. That puts the nail in that coffin. Thanks for the reply.

There are exceptions. You can’t use game fish in MN but you can use rough fish such as suckers. I believe it has to come out of same body of water that they use it in though

Cut bait is my absolute favorite bait for catfish. Carp, suckers, goldeye in that order. You can also any non edible portion of game fish for bait too. Like putting perch eyes on buckshot spoons.

You can’t use whole or parts of game fish, gold fish, carp or salamanders (including mudpuppies for bait as it states on page 30 of the regs handbook. Perch is a gamefish…so its of limits!

Helps to have the area you reside in below you user name or at least mention the state being referred to.

Thats been the rule in Montana and North Dakota. I should just assume that in Minnesota, if you have to ask, its probabaly illegal.

We used to use one 4” perch for cut bait years ago, one 2” piece would be good for most or all of the day, it was more productive than plastics or minnows. I have heard the DNR worries about people using perch eyes.

Growing up in ND during the drought era … there were not the places (sloughs) to fish back then.

I guess the positive was the 50 – 60 fishable lakes usually had little snow to worry about or navigate around. To think … hand augering through 24 – 36 inches of ice. Pick your spots carefully.

Perch eyes were always are preferred bait once we caught a few.
