I verrrry frequently fish a spot up near the ford dam on foot. Very near the ford dam. So far up that it is part way up the island. The water is very shallow and fast here. I have one little Eddie that slows way down and drops to about 10 ft. I usually get walleyes there most of the year(be it a fish or 2 per night with a few dandies) but lately have not been finding walleyes except for 1 17″. I usually fish from evening into the dark a bit, either casting cranks or jig&plastic. My question is is it more time for a night bite to start? Also, do you think those are just a few random fish? Will walleyes put up with all that shallow fast water just to get to a 30 foot long, 12 foot wide spot? The carp are thick in there now, also caught a few baby smallies and a 6lb channel. Would u guys be throwing cranks(style, size?), jigs with plastics, or live bait rigs? Sorry for the frenzy here, it’s just been eating at me. Thanks so much anybody!

Jake, you are not alone! … I think in the next couple days – weeks walleye will be back in action.. I think the walleye chicks are finding good food somewhere just not where we are fishing…

I have always looked at fall walleye fishing as the colder the water the better! That may not be correct but it has always worked for me so we have some really nice fishing just around the corner. (I too have fished that spot (20 plus years ago!) but used to use a jig n minnow combo to catch many different species in that area and fall was always the best…) RR

I haven’t got out much lately, but couple night trips have put eyes to shore.

Remember the locks closed up for barges midsummer north of you. While there wasn’t too much barge traffic to begin with, it seems the water is a lil bit clearer, earlier this year than others. But every year I fish the river it seems it gets that way as well so ??

If a spot doesn’t put out after a couple trips I move on to next, then next then next and maybe back to said spot. River is a big place to keep banging your head against one spot. Spots change, bottom changes, remember that.

Flash floods, cold water, hmmm, might “shock” some of those minnows in smaller streams and the quickness of the current might exit some of those into the river, at the same time providing nice clear water for ambush, while thunder is gonna send some into some deeper water, find some holes adjacent to such streams preferably down current, sorry, thinking out loud.
