Always a lot of talk about the price of boats either new or used. Seems people are quick to point out how over priced boats are yet take many vacations that cost thousands. Drink spendy fancy coffees, sports drinks, specialty beers. Have every possible 4 wheeler, snowmobile, collector car, truck.

Maybe some people stick their money and priorities in different places than others? laugh

Lots of people don’t do/own/consume any or most of those things and still think boats have got out of control expensive. Compare prices 5 years ago to today.

Some people own things and travel for vacation and still talk when travel prices shoot up. Are we not supposed to discuss the cost of what brings us enjoyment if we have several? I guess I’m not following your logic.

Boat prices are absurd to me. I don’t really care what other people perceive them as though. We vacation when I can get away from work. The wife goes without me if I can’t. We have some other toys and land, but not the extent of toys some have. I can’t stand anything other than a splash of half and half in my coffee. Could we update the fishing boat or tritoon? Sure. I don’t care to at these prices though even if “they aren’t coming down.”

Everyone has different opinions and priorities as Dutch said, and as long as you pay your bills and don’t screw over other people…who cares?

I know a local acquaintance who lives in a $2 million dollar home and fishes out of a 25 year old boat twice a week on the river in some ragged jeans and a jacket that should be surrendered to the moths. He travels the world too with his wife who looks like she’s more man made than natural.

I also know of a local guide who has a $75k boat upgraded every few years and lives in what looks like a double wide worth probably as much as his boat on a good day.

Both seem happy. To the best of my knowledge I’m not paying for either.

I love my old boat. No way in hell would I want a 70k boat. Me fishing out of my 20 year old boat allows me to have other toys that I pay for in cash. Actually just bought another snowmobile a few weeks ago. My new truck is paid off, my new brush guard goes on it today actually those ain’t cheap.
I do in fact have a red bull addiction but I still don’t want a boat I need to worry about 24 7. Bet my boat puts as many or more fish in it then most big fancy spendy rigs I see out on the water. Life’s good I have no complaints. As for coffee. I like cheap and black

You shouldn’t. But when they show up with their hand out looking for someone pay for their bad decisions. Judged you will get.

Always amazing how much some people know about others. Had no idea how much fancy coffee, sports drinks, and specialty beers I drank. Also gonna look for my snowmobile and collector car when I get home, I’m so wreckless I don’t even remember buying them.

The cost of everything going up goes both ways. If you were lucky enough to have “all” the toys three years ago your sitting ok. If your trying to buy everything from scratch right now good luck. Having 3-400k of wheeled toys including cars isn’t out of line if you can afford them. How else would our state survive without all the sales tax revenue.

Everyone has different priorities. I fish 4-5 days a week. I fish often in most weather conditions. I enjoy fishing tournaments, and guide when possible, AND I don’t have any kids. So I can easily justify spending what looks like a ton of money on my boat to others.

I’m certainly not living like Dave Ramsey. But if you lived a life like he says you should, it’d be a pretty boring life.

Happiness is a state of mind. One can choose to be happy with what they have or not. I would like to acquire or upgrade something. For most people this requires some sacrifices in other areas of your life to reach your goal. This is just more difficult with the prices jumping like they are. Such is life. I will admit, I am jealous of what some have. On the other hand. I know some who are jealous of what I have. It’s your choice how you want to spend your money. I know some things I will never be able to afford to have and have accepted that.

Too many people need to bitch about something, anything. Many times some of the things that set a person off amazes me, and I think to myself if that is something that pushes you over the edge you must be living a pretty easy life. Oh and to some degree jealousy criticizing what others buy or have. It is no business of theirs. Worry about your own life. FYI:I am not directing this at anyone, just making an observation.

As soon as I stopped caring about what others thought of me or the stuff I had life got a whole lot easier. My kids are in sports so we have sacrificed a lot of our time and money for that. That has been our choice. I figured out what their sports cost last year and it was about $6500 for the 3 boys. That could have been some sweet upgrades to the new boat I have used 3 times this year but watching them compete and have the chance to do things I never got to growing up is worth every penny and sacrifice.

I think a lot of it isn’t the lack of “reachability” it’s more a concept of reasonable expenses.

    I’d love a 90k boat –
Using it a handful of times a year doesn’t justify keeping up with the joneses.

People are just getting too concerned about what others think of them – look at the multi-billion $ social media machine…

To me life is to short to worry about how others spend their time and money.
Don’t worry I won’t come knocking on your door with my hand out.

Time to hook up the rig and head further north with the fam to spend some quality time on the water together. peace

Happiness is a state of mind.

There’s this too. Everyone should do what works for them and makes them and their families happy so long as it’s reasonable and not financially risking their or their loved ones’ futures.

We hardly ever, ever eat at restaurants or fast food. And I’m never one to say “I don’t feel like making anything for lunch, I’ll just grab something at Kwik Trip.” But we also go on a decent warm weather vacation most winters. My wife and I are pretty aligned in that we’re glad we’ve travelled to some extent at our ages while we can still hike to a waterfall in the Dominican or climb an old WWII observation point in Oahu. To each their own.

Things change over time with priorities too. Had a buddy that decided on a whim to go to a Vikes game last year, tickets around $200 each for him and his wife. I am HUGE sports homer but thought “I could do a Vegas trip for about that much.”

I feel like subjects like salaries and spending habits mostly just lead to judging (just look at this post) so I try not to get into anyone’s financial business.

Exactly. Considering how other Americans leveraging the crap out of their lives does impact all of us (2008 being an example), I think its a very legit conversation topic.

What astonishes me is the number of jackbaits who will take time to message you to point out how overpriced the item is that you are selling. Some of these spankers will even send links to machines that they think are priced correctly and even include a helpful offer in case “you really are interested in selling it and will accept what it’s really worth”.

I usually reply with a link to McDonald’s online application site. Telling them of course to get a job so they can really afford the stuff they’re spending all this time looking at.

No kidding. I just sold a four-wheeler and I had multiple winklespanners message me telling me it was overpriced. I told them I’d get back to them soon but right now I was busy arranging times for all the guys who wanted to buy it to come and see it. I sold it in less than a day for the asking price and if I would have had four more of them I could have sold them too.

Grouse, I hear you there. I’ve got a guy who emailed me 3 times last year about asking “too much” for a snowmobile package that included, among other things, an entire parts sled to go with the sled. And the parts sled was already parted out and sorted into bins.

I felt my ask was reasonable based on others in the market, this guy just couldn’t stop obsessing over mine. Told him to make offer all 3 times- crickets each time. Meanwhile I had a guy who wanted to drive from Michigan to come get it but I talked him out of it as I pointed out he can get a nicer unit on his local craigslist for a similar price.
