Rolling his own smokes makes tons of sense. Saves 1000s. Missing a lifetime trip with kids and grand kids over a couple hundred dollars if that seems wildly not that great of a choice. If it were my dad, I’d cover the trip and tell him it’s paid for already.
My dad is also a stubborn old mule

Money has nothing to do with him rolling smokes or not going to Canada. And he won’t miss anything, we will just spend the time at the cabin with him instead.

Bingo! Why can’t more people just be happy doing that? To me fishing is just something we do while I enjoy time with my family and friends.

Wild to make the posts he makes while actively hoping for US tourism to his lodge. Some things are better left un said, or kept between your group and not on forums. But self control is tough some times. I struggle some days as well. But I’m not trying to pimp my business.

    Agreed.

Trumps 3rd Tern – Steve Bannon

Canadian Woman Jasmine Mooney detained for 11 days – CBS

Detentions at US border prompt UK, Germany, and Nordic nations to revise travel advice – USA Today

I guess the difference is, you can now be “detained” at the border without ANY due process – just held in limbo – no lawyers, no charges, until the ICE teams figures out if you might be some kind of a threat.

Nothing from FOX News yet – guess they have’nt figured how to make Trump look good on “detentions” of innocent people from other countries yet.

“Wild” posts are just an FYI – of what is happening to the USA, and how the current administration is ENDING all of the alliances with other countries it once had.

I was just hoping Common Sense would prevail in the US – and people would object to their government declaring WAR on Canada and other countries.

Guess not – GL with Trump – I will do as all of the other companies are doing now in Canada – look to within, and other countries to do business with.

Yes Original posts were to “pimp” – promote – business – I didnt realize then the intentions of Trump to Take over Canada

You’al be happy – wont post again

That’s how it’s always been if you show up at the border, particularly not your own border, without the proper visas and documentation. Think Canada lets anyone in without proper paperwork? Give me a break.

I was just hoping Common Sense would prevail in the US – and people would object to their government declaring WAR on Canada and other countries.

Common sense is prevailing, no country can survive a wide open border and open check book. Time for you and your countrymen to start paying your own freight in trade and defense. And stop with this declare WAR BS, you guys couldn’t even defend yourselves from Baby Castro taking your pistols. And half your country is gender fluid. We could walk thru Canada anytime we wanted to, with 1/2 a states national guard.

WOW. Something I said in a post reply must have really pissed him off. My post and his reply seem to be deleted. Was not sure what happened but by the new 234342 reply I guess I now know. I didn’t think my post was anything over the top but must have been seen as such

Taste maybe. Size and quantity, No where even close. I catch more 40″+ pike in one Canada trip than I have in a lifetime in Minnesota. I catch more walleye in a day than I do in the whole year here in Minnesota.

Simply not true. Plenty of places that would rival any Canadian lake. Especially for walleye.

And if you still think tariffs are to make everything made in the US (especially Canadian tariffs)I have some ocean front property to sell you.

I have to say where I go in Canada, there is no comparison for walleye fishing aside from getting lucky here in the US somewhere every once in a while. I fish the English River NE of Kenora for a week every June. With 2 guys in the boat, if we dont catch 100 or more walleyes in a day, its a slow day (we keep track every day)

Here in WI, a 100 walleye day is very very rare but has happened

For that reason alone, our group will continue to fish for a week in Canada as long as we are allowed/welcomed

Also, this winter the wife and I went ice fishing in Canada on LOTWs and had a blast and we rebooked for next winter already. Hopefully the pissing match just blows over as the initial reason for the tariffs was BS anyway (fentanyl from Canada, really?)

Hard to beat a fly-in. Not too many places you can have a premier walleye lake all to yourself.

Hopefully, in 2-3 weeks when I go up to Sask to chase some snow geese they don’t molest me at the border for bringing extra ammo across. If they do I will be leaving everything up at my farmers place to minimize the pain when I go back this fall.

Not getting in on the political argument. But if you’re heading to Sunset Country/Lac Seul area, you’re probably going through Dryden. Dryden has a good grocery store, comparable to a Cub here. If not heading that far north, I gotta think Ft Francis has something like that as well, but I’ve never stopped there.

I appreciate the original poster for including the comments from the border superintendent. The information provided was both detailed and complete. Have yet to read anything like this on other web sites.
As much as my group likes my wife’s homemade spaghetti sauce, I’ll not be bringing it up – even if I have receipts for all the ingredients. It’s just not worth the hassle.
Pretty sure our group will buy groceries once we get over the border – probably in Dryden as there are at least 3 good size grocery stores in that town.
I’m still going to bring up extra gas jugs and just pay the tariff out of my pocket. Besides not having to worry about running out of gas on a very remote road, it has to be cheaper that buying gas in Canada.
I might even exchange some US dollars in my town before the trip for best exchange rate and make it easier to pay the tariff at the border.

We go through Baudette and on to Sioux Narrows. There are a couple small convenience stores along the way with one right by the access in Sioux Narrows.

Last time I had to pay duty we had to pull over in the designated space and go in to the building. On a busy day they do not have much capacity to be implementing this tariff to everyone. This bottle neck would slow crossing the border to a crawl on any normally busy time frames. Oh, previously on a busy day it is already moving at a crawl. Is a snails pace more accurate.

Warroad and Baudette may not be so bad but International Falls would be a nightmare.

We crossed in Baudette last Wednesday at about 2:00pm. 4 of us stopped and grabbed a case of beer each at duty free shop. Got to boarder. They never asked about any groceries or homemade food or milk or eggs. Asked about alcohol and bait. We had to go inside and pay $43 Canadian total for the duty and were on our way. Thought it went very smoothly.

And no questions about the 8 gas cans that we had strapped to the trailer with our snowmobiles

well a 100 fish day with the average size being between 21-23″ all on artificial bait would be rather easy if that’s what we wanted. If you know of a place somewhere here in the US that that’s the norm, I’m open for the Info.

As far as the Tariffs go, I never said the point was to get to EVERTHING made here in the US. Just a higher % of things.
If you have some ocean front property to sell you, it must have been a poor purchase for you other wise you would not want to be selling it.

Picking up groceries in Dryden or other locations is a possibility but there are concerns doing this. Will the store have all the items needed with more fisherman taking this route? How much additional time will it take?
Even with strong US dollar the Canadian grocery prices are still higher than in the US especially if you purchase in bulk for a large group at a place like Costco or Sams Club.
It might just be easier and save time by packing wisely and have all consumables readily available for inspection with receipts in hand.
Hopefully by the time everyone starts crossing in May/June this situation will have been resolved.

We’ll be crossing into Manitoba this Sunday heading up for one last crack at the big greenbacks on Lake Winnipeg. It will be interesting to see how the border crossing goes…

I will go to Canada Fishing and Hunting until I am physically not able to anymore. I am a BIG fan of it becoming part of the USA to make it easier, but then it will probably be over governed and made the land of no fun too. Really, does it make sense for Canada to be part of the British Monarch ? whistling

Please give a report of how the Border crossing goes for you. It will be interesting to get a report from a recent crosser to see how much of a issue it is.

Is anyone concerned this plot seems an awfully lot like the movie Canadian Bacon? Create a fake war to try to drive up polling numbers? And gullible people buy it right up.

All the land and lakes would be donated to the indians that were there 250 years ago and you wouldnt be able to fish anymore.

I went up this Sunday to Lake Winnipeg. I had no problems along with 2 other trucks in our party.
They just asked purpose of coming to Canada with the customary weapons, alcohol, and drug questions.
    No mention of tariffs.
However, a friend with a group of 7 guys came up 2 days later and were subject to random check of background records. One had 2 minor arrests 23 and 43 years ago. When asked about any offenses he did not admit them as he thought they were expunged from his records. They denied him entry, even though he has been to Canada over 40 times in last 20 years.
Another guy was denied because he had dwi 14 years ago even though he has been up there last 4 years.
So bottom line it is still up to the discretion of border agent.

Received this from a resort I fish out of in Morson. (Miley’s Place) Hopefully this is where it lands with no further changes

UPDATE: March 27, 2025 – NO TARIFFS on Personal Grocery Items!!

    See announcement from NOTO below::

“NOTO was pleased to confirm this afternoon with the Director General of CBSA through TIAC and CBSA at the Fort Frances border that tariffs will NOT be applied to personal items including consumable items brought into Canada by non-resident visitors.

As long as the amount of grocery items is “appropriate for their needs and consistent with the purpose, nature and duration of their intended stay in Canada” no tariffs will be applied on USA products.
