Crossing into Canada

I would consider buying more groceries in Ontario but would be concerned about finding bare shelves after crossing the border from the rush of other tourists. Not many options at that point. Hopefully this blows over or the stores have a plan to deal with it.

If Im understanding correctly, we will need to keep and show all receipts for any food and fuel we bring across and then pay a tariff on it?

Not the end of the world, just wondering how they would calculate the tariff and if we would be able to confirm how accurate the cost is? Also, this will make border crossing a very long process, may be best to cross very early or vary late as they very well need to go thru everything in all vehicles and boats.

I know I pack my food in coolers and totes so going thru every item to determine the tariff amount will take some time. Multiply that by 3 or 4 guys per truck?

Oh it definitely could take more time. As was already stated, it’s not necessarily the cost, it’s the time. Or in this case, a potential lengthy delay.

Bring receipts for everything which hopefully speeds up the process but don’t be surprised if it takes longer. A lot longer in some cases.

I don’t know how you guys can do it. I drive by the line up in international falls all the time in the summer and it’s literally miles long. It must take hours and hours to get through. You know the line is moving slow when there people standing in the grass on the side of the road shooting the $hit drinkin beers.

It normally doesn’t take up more than 15-20 minutes. The o ly time it takes longer is if they are checking boat live wells. Be sure to fully wipe out and dry them. If a spoonful of water is found it will be into the wash down line you go. That process will se you back a fair amount of time for sure

We typically cross between 5AM and 6AM on a Saturday morning, it goes very quick. Im sure it helps when they run the truck plates and scan the passports they can see we cross every year and have not been flagged for any issues.

Yes, I am curious how they will handle this subject when heading by land to the Northwest Angle as well as our remote border crossings.

Remote area border crossing permits have been suspended. If you have one that was issued after September 2023 in which case it’s good until end of 2025. We can’t do our remote crossing trip this year because my kid skipped last year so his last RABC was issued May 2023. But in general, I don’t see any feasible way to charge tariffs on goods brought across in remote locations.

I don’t blame Canada for their response. I feel bad for the citizens of both countries who will be the ones to feel the pain while their idiot “leaders” continue the pissing match.

    I agree dirty.
For me, if I support our president’s actions ( I do) then this is part of the pain I must suffer for him to succeed and get this country back on the right track. No doubt we will feel it in some fashion over the next couple years.
We get to the border at Fort Frances by 10 am on Friday of the opener and usually wait at most 10 minutes. We were there during the first Covid re-entry and the line was almost all the way to Ranier!! Went to Baudette and crossed with no wait. However, one hour to baudette and one hour back to fort Frances. The wait was 8+ hours I was told by a local.
Buy most of our food in Canada to support Canada business but the store in fort Frances is often poorly or out of stock so that’s a problem.
We will deal with it and be prepared.

On my last crossing a couple months ago we got everything but a cavity search…. roll

Before leaving my buddy’s house we searched my truck for anything that could cause an issue for us to cross. During our pre-search we ended up pulling out a handful of boxes of ammo and all was deemed good.

A little later and an hour before the border my Dad piped up from the back seat and said “I did a naughty..” rotflol

He admitted to having an extra 12 pack of Bailey’s shooters over our alcohol limit.

We have him $hit and laughed and I said we’d probably be good without declaring it. Worst case scenario we’d probably get a talk and have to pay a little duty.

But when we crossed, the border agent chick asked a lot more questions than normal and I had a hankering we would get checked.

A couple minutes later we were under the canopy with Canadian Border Officers digging through everything.

I rolled up my tonneau cover for them and they dug through everything; the truck box, truck cab, snowmobile boxes, etc.

My Dad about had a second heart attack when one of the agents jiggled his bag hiding the shooters jester

The agent put it back without seeing what it was and after another 10 minutes of searching we were on our way to catch some Lakers yay

On our crossing back to America the U.S. agent mentioned that part of my front license plate lettering was missing (from pressure washing at home) which makes a “J” look more like an “I)

I’m thinking that could have been the reason we got pulled into the Ontario side days prior.

Not to say it will happen just crossed into Canada across the fort and non of these things were inforceed buisness as usual. I wish people wouldn’t post gloom and doom if we have to pay so be it but don’t get everyone worked up.

Appreciate the info. This pretty much describes border crossings altogether… Varies from port to port and agent to agent and usually much easier than expected. To be fair the original post was copy/paste straight from Sunset Country, and getting distributed by individual resorts as well.

And as always the doom and gloom “just another reason not to go to Canada” guys, don’t ever actually go to Canada anyway. So I have no idea why they read the thread and feel compelled to post

    100% Right.

Yes sad Trump has attacked Canada and other countries with an Economic War and the citizens of those countries and the USA will pay the price.

A Canadian Government official just announced a Travel Advisory to warn Canadians to travel to the USA only if absolutely necessary.

Also Germany just announced a travel warning about visiting the USA

A dangerous place for travellers right now with ICE on the warpath – some Canadians and German visitors have been rounded up and detained – Canadian actress for 10 days in a”shithole cell” she said, a German businessman put in chains – Yikes.

Not sure what will become of border crossings , likely easier and quicker as fewer people will be crossing in either direction for likely at least the next 4 years, maybe longer as Trump staffers are going to announce he will run for a third term – he is going to change the “rules” on POTUS terms.

Ive done a fair amount of searching this and cannot find anything to support what you are saying. I am guessing you are getting your information from sources in Canada in which that COuntry jails reportors for merely asking people on the street questions. Meanwhile a reporter from Canada is in Prison in the UK for doing the exact same thing and in solitary confinement.
This is what I was able to find about travel advisories and nothing supports what you posted. Also, separately, Canada explicitly stated “Follow normal precautions for entering the united states”.

“On Tuesday, Germany’s Foreign Ministry updated its travel advisory for the U.S. after several Germans were reportedly detained at the border.

The ministry said that neither approval through the U.S. ESTA system nor a U.S. visa means people will be granted entry every time.

“The final decision on whether a person can enter the U.S. lies with the U.S. border authorities,” a German ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday.

The change does not count as an official travel warning, they added.

The United Kingdom published a similar advisory on Wednesday regarding immigration and understanding the laws for U.S. entry.

“You should comply with all entry, visa and other conditions of entry. The authorities in the U.S. set and enforce entry rules strictly. You may be liable to arrest or detention if you break the rules,” the guidance reads.

It’s a deviation from earlier this year. Archived versions of the U.K.’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) website from February briefly reference U.S. entry rules being strictly enforced, at the time providing no explicit warning about potential legal consequences.”

I blame Canada for making it harder for their main tourism source (Americans) to come there and spend money. Seems extraordinarily short sighted, and likely to only negatively impact themselves. But something tells me the suits in Ottawa don’t really care what happens to Reelpro and others resort business. With my Dad’s health we were looking into a fly in this summer, but we will put that off at least a year now.

Why ? To save 200 bucks ? If health is a concern then now is better then later. I learned that the hard way with a family member who is now gone.

It sounds like the general election will be held April 28th. After ousting Trudeau, I can’t possibly believe they would elect Carney, who is so far left he makes Trudeau look like a libertarian. The biggest issue right now is Trump’s tariffs have somehow united a fractured liberal party in Canada. I believe Poilievre would have been a slam dunk as the next elected leader of Canada if the trade war hadn’t become so bitter. I’d also hold off on any plans as well if I were in your shoes.

    Why ?

Because he’s an ornery old goat who doesn’t tolerate what he deems BS. As an example he started rolling his own cigarettes for years because of the “Obama” tax on store bought. He already was reluctant going due to what he deems a hassle of driving across the border, add in more scrutiny and a 25% tariff means he just won’t go.

Rolling his own smokes makes tons of sense. Saves 1000s. Missing a lifetime trip with kids and grand kids over a couple hundred dollars if that seems wildly not that great of a choice. If it were my dad, I’d cover the trip and tell him it’s paid for already.

Wild to make the posts he makes while actively hoping for US tourism to his lodge. Some things are better left un said, or kept between your group and not on forums. But self control is tough some times. I struggle some days as well. But I’m not trying to pimp my business.

All this talk is just ridiculous. If everyone is that worked up about it just stay home. I haven’t crossed for a bit now but our neighbors go a couple times a week to play cards and shop at wallmart and they say nothing has changed. To all that say it’s ridiculous having two idiots in control, it’s about time we stand up to getting ripped off for far to long and it feels good to finally have someone in charge who has the balls to put an end to it.

Money has nothing to do with him rolling smokes or not going to Canada. And he won’t miss anything, we will just spend the time at the cabin with him instead.

It’s not really a big deal to buy stuff in Canada rather than bring it over from the US with how far the US dollar goes in Canada right?

I went to Toronto last fall and we went to the Hockey Hall of fame (which gave me chills to see the Cup) I remember looking at my bank account and I was like hey everything is like at a discount over here with the exchange rate when we bought stuff.
