Looking for reports of time/location visual spottings of the loons that stage in Lake St. Croix between Lake Michigan and their northern breeding grounds. Heard one call as a left Stillwater Library Sunday evening…it sounded like the alarm call they use when elbowing the Canada geese at Bayport. PM or open post ok.

Triple cool–thanks Mark! We are still awaiting a visual 2011 sighting of the Loons that migrate through the Croix.
Sunday watched a mob of gulls dive-bombing some pairs of mergansers diving for shad in the open water of River Park Marina at Bayport. About two miles west of me in Stillwater, a loon generally spends some of the summer avoiding the dives of our bald eagles. Two years ago, caught on my cell phone the alarm call of a spring migrating loon off Lakeside Park in Bayport in a yelling contest with Canada geese over a parking spot. Interesting to read what happened to one of the collared loons in the study–chest infection, possibly from bad food. Wonder how long till they come up with mortality traceable to lead shot or sinkers?

The Loon effect on the Croix. I have run across them on occasion and you peeked my interest. The flyway of the croix is so unpredictable its amazing to see what comes through if we catch it at the right time. I had no idea the loon staged this area.
