St Croix is coming back down and the islands are almost back within their banks. River today is at 678′ (normal summer stable pool elevation is 675′) and dropping near a half a foot a day. Water temp today was 79 degrees. I picked up my first decent sized flathead last night – this one measured out at 46″ length and 26″ girth which should put it right about 34 lbs. This one was a bit beat up so the spawn is probably going on. I’m out again tonight – this fish got me cranked up again.

Nice fish! Glad to hear the water is on the way down. Now my pool 8 crappie spots in the running sloughs might work!

There is a famous John Wayne quote that goes: “Life is tough but it is even tougher when you’re stupid”. I’ve decided that it is stupid to beat up your hands getting flathead rash when all you need to do is put on a glove to prevent it. I use a gripper on all channel cats and a glove on flatheads – and I’m much happier because of it. So to all you anti-glove guys –

That’s why I said just kidding, I’m surprised one of these IT guys hasn’t dug up an old post here of me and a channel…and a WHITE golf glove. Never thought that thread would end! Did the flat come on a bully?

Yep – he came on a BIG 7″ bullie. He grabbed it and took off on a long screaming clicker run. It was music to my ears – I had 3 other runs that night and missed them all. Last night I had one good run early (2020) that I missed and then nothing after that. I moved around 3 times last night but no luck in the other spots.
