    Hi all,

Does anyone here know if the authorities prohibit camping at the island just north of the swing bridge at the top of the Hudson Channel? I believe this may be railroad property and was wondering if either the sherrif or the railroad is in the habbit of booting prospective campers from this area. I know boaters often pull up and use the beach during the day, but don’t know if its used for camping overnight.

We are thinking about camping in the area with kids this weekend and the channel islands are definitly not family freindly and get to be public health hazzards by this time of the year.

    Any info is greatly appreciated.

I have walked down the railroad property and fished by the swing bridge. I know many people have taken boats and stayed over night using tents. I don’t think you would have any problem walking down to the beach and setting up camp.

    Sandbar,
That was back in High School. I think Earl is looking for information more current than 30 years ago.

Class of ’82 still rocks though.

    Earl,
You should try camping at the end of the dike. Since they have porta potties there, I’m sure the beach is much cleaner. You could even sneak up to [censored] after dark or you might even have a visitor or 2 after bars close.

I have heard mixed stories, some people say they have been ticketed while others report no problems. As far as people showing up via boat they were there all weekend over the 4th without any problems

Earl – River is at 680 feet today so most of that sandbar might be under water. You might want to check it out in person before you load up the boat with equipment and kids. The St Croix is forecasted to be at 678′ by next Wednesday so next weekend may be better.
