Black Bass Pt on the Wisc. side below Afton has a natural sandbar marked with a channel bouy that is the closest thing to a wingdam I know of on the river. This bar shifts a lot with the heavy current there and different water levels but the area is a good one to check out with your lectronics!
Incidently, don’t bother bringing your swimming suit as the Croix has a severe algae bloom right now–related to third high water of the year???? Windmill Marina at Afton reports surface temp Thurs night at 77 degrees F.

I had the same water temp last night but as far as the algae bloom it’s not that bad as compared to most other lakes. It wouldn’t stop me from swimming or any the other people swimming, tubing, or skiing last night. I guess use your own discretion but it’s not stopping most people although I wish more would stay away.

    Only a couple

They aren’t very well known or big for that matter, but there are 2 – 3 I know of between Hudson, and the Kinnie

If you had to guess, how many would you say there are between Stillwater & the Kinnie

In the simple meaning of the term, yes there are. Because of the reletive slow current and overall depth in the croix the Corps of Engineers really didn’t need to put many in. Leaving out the fact they were useless without faster water. After barge traffic stopped in the early 90’s, channel maintenence basicly stopped. Real simple to find them though. If you see it’s pretty shallow near shore (look near navigation bouy’s) and there is a good current, below stillwater, there’s a chance it needed it. I think 1989 was the last time they dredged the channel. I know this year they were doing a survey of the channel conditions to see if it needs dredgeing. I’d say it will be needing it based on what I’ve seen happen in the last decade or so. So expect some changes at your favorite honey holes soon. My question though to you is this. Why look for wing dams when all the dredged material stacked everywhere from bridge building projects is so productive? That’s where the fish are.
