First experience with the Croix

So I fished the St. Croix on Saturday as planned and wow was it a different experience. Thanks for all the tips from my last posting. We decided to launch in Hudson instead of regional bluffs. The main landing was full and had a sign open to residents only when full. So we put in just a little south of it at a small grassy landing. When I backed up my boat to drop in the lady running the show there freaked because I turned left to spin around instead of right and broke her routine and wow $15 to launch my boat.

It was cloudy and pretty breezy out, but the big “tuna” boats were out in full force. I’m used to fishing Pool 8 so I thought I’d seen my fair share of big pleasure boats, but you guys have us beat hands down on the Croix. We fished pretty much every rocky transition all the way up to the high train bridge with only a hand full of 10-12 in smallies. We only caught 2 over 14 inches all day. Most were taken on black/blue or green/brown all terrain ½ oz flippin jig.

I didn’t get a chance to fish south of the big marina in Hudson. Is the bite better running south? How is the fishing in the marina around the rocks? In all it was nice to experience some new water and I plan to be back in a couple weeks. Any help putting my next game plan together would be appreciated.

hey, i was out saturday as well. launched from the same place too, didnt know the price before we got there. after a poor bite on the river we went to a usual shore spot and was 5 for 5 on the first casts for smallies all 14# or bigger, with one topping out at 4 1/2#. i was just dragging fat heads over a rocky/slighty weedy transition. if you can find minnows on the points your fishing try some cranks or grubs/minnow plastics. a few guys came past us pitching jigs and worms when we were on the river, but nothing spectacular was ever caught by them.
