It was a beautiful night for cat fishing on the St Croix. Calm, cool, water just like glass. Almost no bugs, hardly needed the Thermacell. River is still rising, tonight it was at 678.6′ (normal pool is 675′) and is forecasted to go just slightly higher to 678.8′. There is a nice current flow throughout the river and the backwaters are holding a lot of bait. I moved around tonight looking for active fish and found a good bite. Water temp was 73 degrees.

I picked up a channel cat upgrade right off the bat hitting a nice 33″ X 19″ fish at 2045. It is tough upgrading now for the King of the Cats contest but I managed two more points – I’ve got a feeling I am about maxed out for the season and it will be interesting to see if my numbers hold up once the Red River crew starts hitting fish.

Here was my log for the night:
    Time Fish Bait Size
    2045 Channel Cut 33″X19″
    2100 Channel Cut 21″
    2120 Channel Cut 20″
    2320 Flathead Bullie 26″
    2340 Channel Cut 26″

Not a bad night. With no night time Twins game on the radio the fish kept me busy enough to pass the time.

I hope to be out again tomorrow night if the weather is good. Have to chase this bite well it lasts.

Sounds like a good night for what, 3 hours fishing? That’s a beauty of a channel too. You never know. Just when you think you are “maxed” out for the season, you might get one of those fish of a lifetime!
