I’m looking at fishing the Lower part of St Croix for the first time ever and will be launching at Bluffs Regional Park. I’ll be with a couple friends that fish the area but strickly shore fisherman so they have no knowledge of the water . Just looking for some pointers on what to look out for and pointers to put us on some fish. Mainly targeting large and smallmouth bass.

    Mainly smallies.

Target any ripraped shore line. As the day progresses contunue to fish the same areas, just deeper.

I’m not a bass guy, but that’s where I’ve caught them in the past.

Yep, cast the shorelines, head up the MN side to the Kinni, then down the WI side. Work the downfalls and note the banks fall off quickly so give it some time to get the lure down. Crayfish plastics, spinners, small cranks (they liked the small blue jointed rap last time). Stay in the bouys out of the landing!

If you are going on a weekend, get to the bluffs early. You will be waiting in line at 6am

When you leave the harbor, turn right, follow the markers well downstream before heading into the main channel.

Plan on being checked by at least one enforcement agency. (DNR, Sherrif, US Park Service etc.) Make sure you have all licenses, tabs, ID’s in order. (Don’t bother going if anyone in the boat has a warrant!)

Plan on being done at 11am. It will be like Hawaii 5-0 out there on a nice day!
