I had a little time this last Monday to drop a camera into the St Croix River near Afton.

I was surprised by the distance I could see for this time of year, the amount of zebra mussels and the amount of weeds at depths between 20 and 30 feet of water.

We didn’t see too many fish. A few smallies and one walleye. I need to spend a little more time out there. It’s not at all what I expected to see for bottom.

Here’s a few snapshots with depths. I don’t have a clue of what the first photo is of. Kinda looked like a coffee pot with Zeebs on it!

First one is a clam. Floater. The kind you see floating with the current in summer.

Almost looks like there is some kind of fish in the top left hand corner of the 3rd photo. Pretty interesting to see weeds on the river at those depths though, kinda explains the deep water panfish bite. Cool photo’s thanks for sharing

There is no agenda for posting these photo’s is there ?

Thanks Herb. There were a couple of them on the bottom. Good cat bait huh?

Jesse, let me know if you find one. I’ll adopt it.

There appears to be much more weed growth the last few years than in years past on the St. Croix.

Yesterday afternoon we encountered a great walleye bite in a current related area that never seemed to have many weeds in years past. The fish were stacked in those weeds, and if you could keep your baits clean, you got bit.

    Stop talking in code SteveO!

Sometime over the next couple weeks I hope to check out the Afton Channel or Catfish Bar. I’ll see what my boat ride says.

And no Mike, we didn’t run out of gas.

I’m pretty supprised with the clarity too, I always thought it was murkier down there
