Longline cranks

Do not under estimate the ability of lures (Raps) to catch fish by longlining.

Longlining means just using braid and a line counter reel. There are tons of good baits to fish in the 14 to 19 foot depth range and longlined lures do this well.
Baits like Thunderstick Jr., #8 Shad Raps, etc.

It seems anglers love to add and make things complicated, though simple is often better.

I like simple!!!! Light jig, half a crawler and my 8’3″ Limit Creek rod have been putting a lot of fish in my boat dragging lately too. Simple but it sure works!!!!

When long lining cranks do you use a leader or tie right onto the braid?

I typically use a 5 to 7′ floro leader – tied onto the fireline with a small swivel – small enough that it will sneak through the rod tip if needed. To the leader I attach a small crosslock, which gives a little better action in the lure and makes it a heckova lot easier and faster to change lures.

I do sometimes get by okay with no leader though. If I’m running into too many of them toothy northerns (before the sun goes down), the leader can cost me some cranks…

Either that or there’s a good jig bite going and Turk wants to get people trolling/moving so they’re not camped out on any of his spots.

The bite must be on. Trolling with a modified leadcore set up was pretty deadly last Wednesday. Much better than rigging. All we got on live bait were sheepskin and smallies.
