05-04-10 St. Croix River 2010 is open for walleye and sauger fishing. Anglers are catching walleye on livebait techniques like Lindy rigs and nightcrawlers, light line split shot rigs, and jig and minnow combo. Trolling Rapala Shad Raps is also catching fish. The river level is low for early May and many of the usual opener places that house walleyes are not as productive as years past. I expect this is because we have had the combination of an early spring (spawn) and that the water has dropped and the fish leave the usual opener locations. Best depths have been from 8 to 15 in the winds and 15 to 22 with less wind. Overall from the majority of the anglers I talked to and Gary Mau from Beanines the opener was less than what most people would have wanted, but the bite is much better today (Don Beimborn brought home a dandy stringer of walleye (no saugers this year yet???)(Tuesday) than it was last Saturday. On Monday Paul Madsen and I managed a few nice walleye as well. Also two cold fronts have come through, and as we know that does not help fishing a lot. The river level is 676.3 just under a foot of what it normally is in mid June. The water is clear with very little debris. Oh and for my clients please note that the sheepshead are on a wild tear! Keep Catchin’ Turk
