    “Good Morning,

The Coast Guard has received notification from the Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) that they will not be able to complete the survey of the St. Croix River by their original estimate of 14 May 2010. The new time frame for completing the survey is late May with the results being submitted to the Coast Guard by late June.

As stated in the previous email released 4 April 2010, the options available hinge upon the hydrographic survey of the St. Croix River being completed by the USACE prior to setting any aids to navigation. The Coast Guard is still committed to setting the aids to navigation but cannot do so safely for our own cutters and boats or the boating public without a hydrographic survey of the area. As soon as the Coast Guard receives the St. Croix’s survey from the USACE, we will be in a better position to determine the appropriate aids to navigation configuration.

The USACE Point of Contact for the Hydrographic Survey is Paul Machajewski at [email protected].

I am still more than willing to answer any questions that may remain.
    Respectfully,

    Austin Glass, ENS
    USCG District 8 “

Wow! Am I reading this right that there will be no cans placed until said survey is completed? Even no-wake markers?

Typical government response. What a bunch of crap. With the early ice out this year, they should have had more time than normal to get the survey complete. Has the Coast Guard always required this survey before putting the cans out? Or is the a convenient excuse this year to delay putting them out (lets blame it on the Army Corp of Engineers)?

I can’t imagine the peole that will be flying through the no wake zones without the cans being out. People fly through those areas when the cans are out.

What the heck does this statement mean?

Maybe they need to by some depth finders from Wade at Jolly Anne.

The Coast Guard puts out the Red / Green navigation buoys which mark the main navigation channel. The No Wake buoys are put out by the National Park Service. The No Wake buoys marking the 8 “Slow – No Wake” zones were put out last week.

Thanks Steve. I misread Has’s post thinking he was saying the No Wake markers weren’t out. From the perspective of fishing in the no wake areas, that is a good thing. I’m not as concerned about the Nav markers.

They were probably busy working the floods this spring so they couldn’t get it done. The river was at flood stage for a long time too. Not all is as it seems with the gov’t!

    Sorry Mark,
I didn’t mean to offend you with my criticism of the CG putting out the buoys this year. I realize the government does a great job at many things. I just can’t seem to think of any.

There are quite a few jobs and businesses that put in extra time when they are running behind schedule. Sometimes they get paid for it, sometimes not. With the number of boats that will be on the river over the next month (and safety being a factor), I would think there would be more urgency in getting the cans out.

I’m probably ignorant (wouldn’t be the first time..), but is this project really this difficult? I mean do we really need a hydro survey to put some cans out? Can’t we just put some side imaging on a tuna boat and get ‘er done? What am I missing?

All this talk of cans on the St Croix definitely reminds me of warm summer days. I’m just saying.
